Can’t ignore it: The Vikings’ GM search looks like a one-way ticket for Kevin O’Connell

The Minnesota Vikings’ search for a new general manager looks quite different this time around compared to how things went in 2022.

Unlike last time, the club isn’t publicising their candidates and chose to wait until after the draft before kicking off a full search.

Things were far more public and fast-paced back in 2022. This time, the process is much more under the radar and seems to be moving at a slower pace.

With Rob Brzezinski stepping in as interim GM through free agency and the draft, the Vikings had some stability that likely helped prevent any quick decisions.

This is significant because it shows the Wilfs are focused on establishing a structure first, rather than rushing into another hire. The new GM isn’t coming in to build everything from scratch this time around.

O’Connell’s position seems even more secure

O’Connell’s recent comments reflect that confidence. “Very much looking forward to a great outcome,” he said, and while the wording was mild, the broader context matters.

O’Connell is now an established figure within the organisation, central to its identity, and it looks like ownership wants to keep that stability in place.

The candidate pool also includes several names with links to the team or staff. That doesn’t guarantee a coach-driven hire, but it does suggest that Minnesota is looking for alignment rather than disruption.

O’Connell’s voice carries more weight

He has proven his ability to lead the team, and the organisation seems focused on maintaining that stability during this transition.

The search includes several candidates with existing ties to the team, signalling a preference for continuity over sweeping change.

The next hire might not have as much independence as previous general managers, but that doesn’t mean it’s the wrong approach.

Plenty of teams benefit from clear alignment between coaching and front office leadership. The Vikings appear more interested in someone who can fit into the structure already taking shape.
