This year a single ticket to the Met Gala costs a staggering $100,000 (up $25k from last year).

Let that sink in. One hundred grand for a single night of avant-garde fashion and bite-sized appetizers. In the sports card market, $100,000 is enough to buy the absolute holy grail for almost any athlete on the planet. But for the true hobby titans? That’s just a down payment.

So, I ran the numbers. Let’s look at 10 athletes who attended the Met Gala and see how their most expensive trading cards stack up against the price of a single ticket to the event.

• Record Price: $32,700 (Fanatics Collect Premier Auction)

• Verdict: Met Gala Wins

  The WNBA card market is absolutely exploding right now, and Reese is one of the biggest drivers of that hype. A true 1-of-1 Green parallel of her highly coveted rookie Kaboom! insert recently hammered for $32,700 on Fanatics Collect. While that is a staggering milestone for modern women’s basketball cards and an absolute monster of a pull, Anna Wintour’s bouncers are still asking for more than triple that amount at the door.

7. Paige Bueckers

• Most Expensive Card: 2023-24 Bowman Chrome University Sapphire Superfractor Auto 1/1
• Record Price: $31,787 (Goldin)
• Verdict: Met Gala Wins Paige is already a household name, and she hasn’t even played a minute of professional basketball yet! Her 1/1 Bowman University Sapphire Superfractor sold for over $31k in April 2025, a staggering number for a collegiate card. Give it a few more years in the WNBA, and we might see her outpace the Met Gala price tag, but for now, the ticket wins.

8. Jimmy Butler

Finding one in a PSA 10 Gem Mint condition is a massive feat, but even a perfect copy of his premier rookie patch auto falls short of the $100,000 Gala entry fee.

10. Alysa Liu

However the sport just doesn’t quite have the hobby infrastructure of the NBA or NFL. This Skybox Metal Universe PMG Purple is a true 1-of-1 grail for the skating phenom. But even capturing the absolute rarest, most highly sought-after insert in the entire set won’t get a ticket to the Met Gala.

At the end of the day, I’m sure Anna Wintour will never extend any Gala invites based on card price but it’s a fun exercise to go through.

Next time you see an athlete flexing on the red carpet, just remember: depending on who they are, their ticket for the night might cost more than their 1-of-1 rookie card!
