The St. Louis Cardinals have surprised everyone but themselves through the season's first 36 games.
At 21-15, they are in the mix for first place in the NL Central and currently own the second Wild Card spot.
There's plenty of time between now and the trade deadline, but the Cardinals could be surprise buyers if they really feel contention is possible.
FanSided's Zachary Rotman wrote on Wednesday that St. Louis should be giving the struggling Houston Astros a call about one of their relievers who was a member of the 2022 World Series champion team.
"Riley O'Brien's emergence as a lockdown closer has been very fun to watch, but who else from this bullpen do you trust? JoJo Romero is and has been a pleasant surprise, but for the most part, it's hard to trust anyone other than O'Brien," Rotman wrote. "There's a reason the Cardinals have the fourth-worst bullpen ERA (4.92) in the sport."

He picked right-hander Bryan Abreu, who has experienced a miserable season to this point, as a potential trade target for the Cardinals. Abreu has allowed 13 earned runs on 13 hits in 12.1 innings after posting a 2.28 ERA in 70 appearances in 2025.
"He shouldn't cost too much to pry away from an Astros team that's likely to sell at the deadline, and he offers a ton of upside," Rotman added. "If it doesn't work out, it's not like Abreu would be that much worse than a guy like Ryne Stanek, and again, he has so much upside. He could give the Cardinals a premier late-game duo as the setup man for O'Brien. It's worth a swing."
The good news for the Cardinals is that Abreu is still striking out batters at an elite (30.8%) clip. His potential last year with the Astros is not going smoothly, so maybe he just needs a fresh start with a new organization.
