Carlos Alcaraz wrist injury may keep defending champ out of French Open
Reigning French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz may not be healthy enough to defend his title when the tournament begins next month in Paris.
Speaking in an interview with LA 1, Alcaraz said a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the Madrid Open has become serious enough that he's not sure he'll be able to compete at Roland Garros.
He said he's currently awaiting test results that will go a long way toward determining his status for the second Grand Slam tournament of the 2026 tennis season.
"Well, we’re going to see," Alcaraz said. "At the end of the day, the next test is going to be crucial for us to say, so we’re going to keep trying to do everything that’s in our hands for the test to go well."
Alcaraz has been photographed in recent days wearing a protective brace on his right hand.
"I’m trying to have a lot of patience these days, but we’re good. We’re here waiting a bit," he said in the interview. "We’ve got some tests here and going forward in a few days. From there, we’ll see how the injury is and the steps to follow. Right now, well, I’m trying to be positive, keep good spirits although these days are getting long."
The seven-time Grand Slam champion won his first-round match in Barcelona last week, but withdrew from the tournament when tests revealed the wrist issue was more serious than first thought.
