
'We started to believe a long time ago!' - Braga confident of Hearts title chances

Carson Young and Laura LeMar have been named Hillsdale County Athletes of the Week for their performances from April 13-19. Young excelled in baseball for Jonesville, while LeMar was recognized for her achievements as a senior ace at Pittsford.
HILLSDALE COUNTY — Two athletes have earned Hillsdale County Athlete of the Week awards for their performances between April 13-19.
Junior Carson Young, a Swiss-army-knife player for Jonesville varsity baseball, won the April 13-19 reader's choice Athlete of the Week poll. Pittsford senior ace Laura LeMar was named the Hillsdale Daily News Choice Athlete of the Week honoree. Together, both athletes had impressive performances across the field for their respective teams.

Young was a team leader in bats, the catcher behind home plate and a pitcher on the mound this past week for Jonesville baseball. He finished the week with four RBIs, three double-base hits, one triple, six totals hits and a run scored. He also pitched in a 5-3 win over Michigan Center, throwing over four innings, striking out four and giving up just two earned runs.
Young continues to earn a place in the weekly top performers for the area, and he looks to be one of Jonesville's top players when playoff ball comes later in the spring.
Runner-Up: Mckenna Drake - Camden-Frontier Softball
In a reader's choice race, Mckenna Drake of Camden-Frontier softball came up just short of winning the voting poll. Drake combined with Madi Drake to throw a no-hitter in a 12-0 win over Waldron. Drake also added three total runs and a steal in the game. In the circle, she threw two innings, striking out four batters while giving up one walk.
Laura LeMar had a standout week helping the Wildcats earn wins with her ace pitching. The senior had a no-hitter in a shutout win over North Adams-Jerome. LeMar struck out eight batters — walking just two. She added three runs and a stolen base in the 16-0 win. She would add one save in relief pitching in the second game of a doubleheader against Reading.
The 6-4 victory was sealed thanks to LeMar’s one inning pitched with two strikeouts and just one hit allowed. LeMar started the first game against Reading — a 6-5 win for the Rangers. LeMar had seven strikeouts, allowing five earned runs, across five total innings. LeMar had one double-base hit, an RBI and a run in the game.
The Athletes of the Week are Carson Young from Jonesville and Laura LeMar from Pittsford.

Jordyn Mapes – Reading softball: Mapes had her first home run of the season in a 6-5 win over Pittsford, helping lift the Rangers to victory. Mapes had two hits, including the homer, two RBIs and two runs. Mapes added nine putouts for the week.
Gavin Wright – Reading baseball: In a 14-5 win over Pittsford, catcher Gavin Wright had an RBI double-base hit that drove in two runs. He added two runs of his own in the game. He also added 13 putouts. For the week, he had a total of 30 putouts with zero errors.
Conner Arsenault – North Adams-Jerome baseball: The senior had a triple-base hit that drove in three runs in a 6-2 win over Pittsford. Arsenault added his own run in the game. He had 16 putouts in one game catching. He had two strikeouts in his first appearance on the mound for the Rams in an earlier loss to Britton Deerfield. He added one run and a steal in that game.
Caleb Bills – Litchfield baseball: Litchfield defeated Tekonsha 22-1 in a dominating league win. Bills had three total hits to lead the team and scored three runs. He drove in one run, doubled and tripled. He added one steal.
Ashton Thornsbury – Hillsdale boys track and field: Thornsbury earned his third straight high jump win for the Hornets at the Ralph Rice Invitational. His jump of 6-feet, 2 inches, kept him undefeated in high jump events this year. He also finished fifth overall in the 100-meter hurdles to lead all county hurdlers.
Payton Nichelson – Jonesville girls track and field: The senior Comet had the best individual finish of any county girls runner in the short distance events at the Ralph Rice Invitational. Nichelson took third in the 200-meter dash in 27.46 seconds. The senior helped lead the 4x400-meter relay team of Miley Dunlap, Kira VanKampen and Amelia Means to a fourth-place finish. She took second in a Cascades 200-meter dash race. In the same event, she took second in high jump and led the 4x100 and 4x200 teams to finish second place.
Harlee Whaley – Hillsdale girls tennis: Harlee Whaley helped Hillsdale tennis defeat Onsted 5-3 in matches. The No. 3 singles player defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0. She earned the lone win of their dual with Tecumseh, winning in three games with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
Jonesville 4x800 girls relay team: The 4x800 relay team of Sophia Morgan, Joleane Gulledge, Kendahl Drake and Keira Knight took fourth place (10:54.20) at the Ralph Rice Invitational. They added one win earlier in the week against Cascades competition. Their run at the Ralph Rice Invitational was more than 12 seconds faster than their run at the Cascades tri-meet at Hanover-Horton.
Keily Kroa - Hillsdale girls track and field: The junior runner competed in four total events at the Ralph Rice Invitational for the Hornets. Kroa took 11th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:09.18. She took fourth place in the high jump with a 4-feet, 8-inch height. Kroa as the second leg of the 4x200 relay, leading the Hornets to a sixth-place finish. She was the second leg of the 4x400 relay team. The team took second to lead all county girls relay results at the Ralph Rice Invite with a time of 4:32.40.
Caleb Blonde - Jonesville boys track and field: The junior distance runner won two events in the tri-meet at Hanover-Horton, including the 4x800 relay race and the 1,600-meter run. Blonde set a season-best 800-meter run time of 1:57.96 at the Ralph Rice Invite to take second overall. He and the 4x400 team of Logan Stanton, Ashton Potwin and Mason Jordan took fifth at the Ralph Rice Invite in 3:33.25.
Jake Drawe – Pittsford baseball: The senior appeared in three games on the mound for the Wildcats, helping them earn their first win of the year in a 2-1 final over Reading. He had 10 strikeouts, allowing just one earned run, while pitching five innings. He had an additional eight strikeouts in game action against North Adams-Jerome earlier in the week. He finished the week with seven putouts, three stolen bases, three runs and an RBI-double.
