No matter where Fighting Irish second baseman Tyler Carlos' baseball career takes him, he'll always be able to say he cleared the fence (on a bounce) at the field budding MLB superstars Konnor Griffin and Paul Skenes once called their home ballpark.
With the game tied at 10 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Carlos turned on a pitch and sent it deep over the Heritage Christian left fielder's head. Carlos scored the eventual winning run on Callum Birdzell's RBI single, but Carlos thought he put the Irish ahead with one swing.
"I did think it was gone," Carlos said. "It's gone on most other fields in this state, but I had to do what's best for the team and get the lead-off guy on."
Carlos finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. The multi-hit night continues a breakout senior season for Carlos. Injuries forced him into the lineup in early April, and he consistently produced offense. The Wabash commit started low in the batting order, but his strong contact skills prompted coach Ed Freije to elevate the 5-foot-9, 160-pound righty into the No. 2 spot in the order, a spot often associated with the best hitter on the team. Carlos leads the Irish in hits, RBIs, doubles and batting average with a .387 mark.
"Tyler's done a great job for us," Freije said. "He stepped in and played a real solid second base. He's done a really good job offensively. ... We had some moving parts (in the lineup) so we looked to move him up and put him in a spot to succeed.
"We tell our guys, it doesn't matter, it shouldn't matter where you're at (in the lineup) just be ready when you're in the lineup, whatever spot that is."
Connor Christiansen and Eli Sinsabaugh had two hits each. Michael Gallagher had an RBI triple. Sinsabaugh and Birdzell drove in two runs each.
Carlos' near blast helped clinch the win for Cathedral, but a seventh-inning home run from Heritage Christian's Jake Meriwhether would have given the senior third baseman a rare feat.
Meriwether has never hit for the cycle at any point of his career, but he stepped to the plate with the bases loaded a home run shy of hitting a single, double, triple and home run in the same game. He hit a line drive down the left-field line for a two-run double in the first. He hit a triple down into right field in the second inning and hit an RBI single in the fourth. He reached on an error in the sixth, and his final at bat of the game ended in a ground out to the pitcher.
Meriwether finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Greyson Gregory also went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Connor Perraut, Connor Benson and Sam Sponseller had two hits each. Benson drove in two.
"I've been kind of close (to the cycle) with a double and a triple, but I've never been that close, I just needed one more," Meriwether said. "Maybe if I go pull-side (I'd homer), but that's hard to do here.
"Just a great game in general, really good opponent. We love playing (Cathedral), we love each other as a team and we're so grateful to be here."
Meriwether is currently uncommitted, but he's putting together a strong senior season. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound infielder is batting .431 with 23 RBIs, six doubles, three triples, two home runs and two stolen bases. He has walked seven times and struck out just seven times, and he has a .895 fielding percentage.
"He is just a great pure hitter," Heritage Christian coach Dan Ambrose said of Meriwether. "He showed you today he can go pull side. He can go triple in the opposite gap. There's really just no good way to pitch him. I just wanted him to hit a grand slam in that last at bat for the cycle, but he's a tough, tough out, and he's surrounded by other tough outs.
"He's so coachable, he's such a great kid. These guys all love each other; they love the Lord. They play hard, they're not soft. I couldn't be more happy and proud of them, and happy for them."
