CENTERBURG â Ahead in the count and with history on the line, Centerburg senior shortstop Abby Herren called a timeout in the first inning of her teamâs first postseason game May 14.
It wasnât to clear dust from her eyes, which would have been understandable given the steady breeze that pushed wind chills into the low 50s.
And Herren said it was not because she was on the cusp of solidifying herself as one of Ohio high school softballâs all-time best home run hitters.
âSometimes I call time to give myself a second,â she said. âIâm in charge of my at-bat ⊠so I want to be able to calm down and think.â
Herren made the at-bat her own â again â by belting her 23rd home run of the season to straightaway center field. That pushed Herren, a Miami University signee, into a four-way tie for first place in state history when it comes to home runs in a single season.
âI wasnât even thinking about that; maybe a double in the gap to start us off,â Herren said after a 12-1 win over visiting Marion Pleasant in a Division V district tournament first-round game. âI think I just got all of that one.â
Herren, whose .693 batting average leads central Ohio and ranks fourth statewide, according to MaxPreps, will go for the outright record May 15 at Loudonville in a Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference game.
If she doesnât get it then, her next chance will be May 18 when the Trojans (21-3) â seeded third in the district â host No. 4 North Union in a district semifinal.
Herren entered May 14 in a four-way tie for second all-time in single-season home runs with Gahanna Lincoln graduate Addie Kittel (2018), another Knox County standout in Mount Vernonâs Hope Straight (2018) and Mount Orab Western Brownâs Peyton Young (2021).
Straight, who went on to play for Ohio State, was Ohioâs leader in career home runs (60) at the time of her graduation in 2019. Metamora Evergreenâs Macy Chamberlin then hit 61 from 2021-24.

Centerburg shortstop Abby Herren swings in the on-deck circle before the first inning of a Division V district tournament first-round game against Marion Pleasant on May 14. A few minutes later, Herren hit her 23rd home run of the season, tying the state's single-season record.
Now, Herren is tied with Warren Championâs Gabby Gradishar (2024), Perrysburgâs Hayley Griggs (2025) and Carly Wagers of Williamsburg (2017). Gradishar is a great-niece of onetime Ohio State football player and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Randy Gradishar.
Herren did not envision herself ending up in the company of Straight or anyone else on those lists. She hit one home run as a freshman, nine as a sophomore and 10 last year.
âI just hit for my team,â she said. âThatâs what I try to do at least, just roll with it, look for pitches I can actually hit. Keep my strikeouts low and walks high. If I can get a walk, Iâll take it.
âItâs definitely been paying more attention to my at-bat, seeing what pitches I can get and understand how I hit. I understand my at-bats more than I used to. I used to swing at a lot of pitches that were definitely not good pitches to swing at, so I try more now to just keep a long at-bat and at least get a walk.â
Herrenâs strikeout in the second inning May 14 was only her second all year.
She added singles in the fourth and sixth innings, and sophomore Jazmyn Larimoreâs grand slam in the bottom of the sixth invoked the mercy rule.

Centerburg coach Chuck Shank expects Herrenâs impact to last long after her graduation.
âWe hope players like Abby and Jazmyn can motivate girls to play,â Shank said, noting Centerburg has just 14 players this spring and no junior varsity team. âWe had almost 40 girls come to our youth camp. To have these girls work with them, they ate it up.â
Larimore, an infielder, might end up following in Herrenâs footsteps. She has 10 home runs and is batting .636 after going deep only once as a freshman.
âI told her on senior night that she makes me want to be better,â Larimore said. âShe makes everybody else want to be better. Thatâs helped us all so much. We have someone pushing us every day. Working with her in the gym, she never skips a rep. Itâs just awesome.â
