While the Boston Red Sox's pitching and defense have been excellent lately, their offense is still lagging behind. Entering play on Thursday, the Red Sox surprisingly rank near the bottom of the sport in numerous offensive categoriesĀ -- including runs, hits, home runs, walks and OPSĀ -- after rating as one of the league's better offenses last year.
There are several reasons for Boston's underperformance at the plate. Roman Anthony's been in and out of the lineup with injuries, several players are slumping, and the recent departures of Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman have hurt.
On Thursday's episode of "The Greg Hill Show," Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy shared his thoughts on why the offense has struggled to get going.
"I just think that we have a handful of guys that are really good players that have got off to really bad starts," Tracy explained. "It's a hard game...the confidence can get affected a little bit. I think what I've seen that has gone here is you got some guys that are good players that are going through struggles and trying to find their way out of it."
To Tracy's point, multiple players are slumping simultaneously, including Anthony, Jarren Duran, Trevor Story, Caleb Durbin, Carlos Narvaez and Marcelo Mayer.
That's most of the lineup, which can have a ripple effect on other players by putting extra pressure on guys to come up with the big hit. It likely explains why several players appear to be pressing and are chasing too many pitches out of the strike zone, especially with runners in scoring position.
Slumps happen, and Boston's lineup has too many quality bats to keep performing like one of the worst offenses in the league, especially at Fenway Park. The Red Sox should heat up eventually, and once they do, that will help them regain their confidence and take some of the pressure off.
