The Los Angeles Chargers selected defensive back Genesis Smith with the No. 131 pick in the NFL Draft, addressing a critical need in their secondary. Smith, who was projected to be picked earlier, could make an immediate impact on defense and special teams.

The Los Angeles Chargers knew they needed to get some help for the secondary during the NFL Draft and they got that in defensive back Genesis Smith, the No. 131 overall pick out of Arizona.
Smith is someone that could have gone much sooner in the draft, but the Chargers stopped his slide on Day 3 and they could benefit from him as soon as this season on both defense and special teams.
“Safety was one of the top needs for the Chargers this offseason, and Smith was one of my favorite late-Day 2 targets who ultimately fell to Day 3,” ESPN contributor Matt Miller wrote.
“With great size at 6-2 and 200 pounds, Smith didn’t post stellar 40 times in predraft workouts, but he’s an instinctive playmaker who can patrol deep and use his power to drive on ball carriers and middle-of-the-field receivers. Tony Jefferson sees significant snaps despite being 34, so Smith should quickly find a home in sub packages.”
The Chargers could blaze a trail for Smith to become a starter down the line with Jefferson going into his mid 30’s, but he will have to earn that role throughout the season.
If he plays like he did in Los Angeles like he did in Tucson, he could have a chance. Smith recorded 164 tackles and five interceptions during his three seasons at Arizona, proving he can make big plays on defense.
Genesis Smith was drafted in the fourth round as the No. 131 overall pick.
The Chargers selected Genesis Smith to strengthen their secondary, which was one of their top needs this offseason.
Genesis Smith could contribute immediately on both defense and special teams for the Chargers.
