The Los Angeles Chargers haven't been as active in bringing in outside free agents as fans would have liked this offseason.
Still armed with significant cap space ($48 million), there is ample room for the Chargers to address several needs before the NFL Draft.
Offensive line and receiver are among the priorities, so too a pass rusher, but there could be another position, and that's tight end. Yes, Oronde Gadsden and the newly acquired Charlie Kolar are on the roster, but no star veteran.
Bleacher Report's Alex Kay thinks a Jonnu Smith reunion with Mike McDaniel is an interesting option.
"A reunion with Mike McDaniel—his head coach in Miami who is now serving as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh—could be exactly what Smith needs to have another Pro Bowl-caliber season," Kay wrote.

A veteran to help lead Gadsden and Kolar isn't a bad idea, and Smith knows McDaniel's system.
In fact, Jonnu had his best-ever NFL season under McDaniel in Miami in 2024, posting 884 and 8 TDs from 88 receptions to earn his first Pro Bowl nod.
So, he's been productive in McDaniel's scheme before, so that should carry weight.
Kay's contract prediction is one year at $6 million. That's a cheap deal for a veteran tight end who very well could help Justin Herbert take the next step in his career.
The Chargers are looking to enhance their tight end position, as they currently lack a star veteran despite having Oronde Gadsden and Charlie Kolar on the roster.

In addition to tight end, the Chargers are focusing on improving their offensive line, receiver, and pass rusher positions.
