In his first media session with the Chargers, new tight end Charlie Kolar quickly won over fans and reporters with his passionate âfootball guyâ enthusiasm for the physical side of the game.
The 27-year-old, who signed a three-year, $24.3 million contract in free agency after four seasons with the Ravens, highlighted his passion for blocking.
"There's something so beautiful about you're up by six points, it's like 3rd and 3-you know you're running it," he said. "There's two minutes left in the game, they have no timeouts. You get a first down, the game's over." "They know you're running it. Your wife knows you're running it. Their wife knows you're running it. You still run it. That is more satisfying than any touchdown I've ever had. That's one thing I've grown to appreciate in the NFL."
Kolar also shared a memorable analogy about how he developed his love for blocking. Comparing it to trying crĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e after meeting his wife, Kolar explained he didnât always appreciate it but now loves it. âThere will always be a place for physicality in this game,â he added.
While he emphasized pride in blocking, Kolar discussed his background as a receiver, noting that he entered the NFL primarily as a pass-catcher.
âI was almost exclusively a receiverâ in college at Iowa State. Upon arriving in Baltimore, he found himself behind Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely in the receiving pecking order, which pushed him to develop as a blocker to earn playing time.
Kolar emphasized that improving one side of his game benefits the other. He noted that working on the âmore receiving sideâ opens up the blocking side as well.
While not utilized in this department that much, Kolar has proven efficient catching passes, averaging 13.6 yards per catch since his rookie season.
