Charles Jourdain met the media Saturday after his win over Kyler Phillips at UFC Fight Night 273.
Jourdain (18-8-1 MMA, 9-7-1 UFC) outworked Phillips (12-5 MMA, 6-4 UFC) for a unanimous decision in the co-main event at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Jourdain won for the third straight time. And after two reasonably quick guillotine choke finishes in a row, he picked up his third straight bonus – this time for Fight of the Night thanks to the bantamweight banger with Phillips.
But the 30-year-old Canadian said he's not happy — though he said that before he knew he was getting an extra $100,000 in bonus money.
"Unfortunately, my guillotine was not working," Jourdain told the UFC after the win. "I think I talk a lot of sh*t with it, and people are quite good at defending it. But I almost pulled off a very nice kimura attempt.
"Kyler Phillips has been five years in the top 15, so he's a very capable man and he was hard to put away. The guy has never been finished, and I thought I would be the one, but no. No one can finish Kyler Phillips as of today."
A finish over Phillips, Jourdain thinks, might have sent a significant message at bantamweight, where Petr Yan reclaimed the title this past December.
But instead, Jourdain thinks there's more work to do back home in Montreal.
"That's not the type of message I want to send," Jourdain said. "… To be completely frank, I think it shows if I get sloppy, I can be controlled, and I don't want to give that message to the bantamweight division. So of course I need to go back to the drawing board and push myself even more.
"Right now, I need to go back home and reassess, because this is not the type of victory that you go chin high. It's a bittersweet victory. I'm happy with the win, but I need to level up."
