Charles Jourdain and Kyler Phillips meet in the UFC Fight Night 273 co-main event Saturday at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.
Jourdain (17-8-1 MMA, 8-7-1 UFC) will look to make it three wins in a row after defeating Victory Henry and Davey Grant. Phillips (12-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC) is looking to snap a two-fight skid,
The co-main event for UFC Winnipeg features a meeting at 135 pounds between Kyler Phillips and Charles Jourdain.
Phillips, who initially burst onto the scene with some big wins, currently finds himself trying to stop the skid of a two-fight losing streak. Whereas Jourdain, who has traditionally had a spotty record up at featherweight, has looked nothing but optimal since dropping down to bantamweight.
I'm usually not someone who looks to back Jourdain, but his recent run has made it much harder to doubt his style and swagger. Couple that with the fact that Jourdain has quietly climbed the ranks as a guillotine choke record holder in the UFC, and I suspect that Phillips' usual outlet of reactionary takedowns could be somewhat limited this Saturday.
Phillips may be a legit Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in his own right, but guillotines have traditionally been the ultimate equalizer submission in MMA (as club-and-subs are always live with someone like Jourdain).
As much as a Phillips "y'all must've forgot" upset is on the table, I suspect that Jourdain will be able to match the MMA Lab product's pace and pull away down the stretch.
The official pick is for Jourdain to edge out a hard-fought decision win on the scorecards.
The oddsmakers and the public favor the Canadian fighter, listing Jourdain -148 and Phillips +120 via FanDuel.
As the co-headliner, Jourdain and Phillips are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 9:40 p.m. ET. The fight streams live on .
