Claypool, a second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020, has appeared in 58 career games but was out of the NFL in 2024 and 2025. He was in training camp with the Buffalo Bills in 2024 but an injured foot ended his season.
Claypool is trying out over the two-day minicamp and isn't currently on the roster. Packers coach Matt LaFleur is in wait and see mode on the 6-4, 238-pound wide receiver.
"He's had great film out there. He's been productive and he looks like he's in great shape, and he's big. We'll see how it goes," LaFleur said after minicamp on Friday.
The Packers reportedly attempted to trade for Claypool during the 2022 season.
Claypool, who doesn't turn 28 until July, caught 153 passes for 2,044 yards and 12 touchdowns over 39 games with the Steelers. He was traded to the Chicago Bears in 2022 -- with Chicago's offer beating Green Bay's -- but managed only 18 catches in 10 games with the Bears before he was traded again, to the Miami Dolphins, in 2023.
No team signed Claypool before the 2025 season despite his healed toe and desire to get back into the NFL.
At his best during his first two seasons, Claypool was a big, versatile receiver who produced back-to-back years with over 800 receiving yards and scored 13 total touchdowns. But things started going downhill in 2022, and he's hasn't regained his footing in the four years since. A tryout in Green Bay will, at the very least, provide an opportunity for Claypool to prove he's worth a 90-man offseason roster spot this summer.
The Packers lost Romeo Doubs (via free agency) and Dontayvion Wicks (via trade) this offseason. Brian Gutekunst signed veteran Skyy Moore but did not select a receiver in the draft. Undrafted free agent J. Michael Sturdivant was signed following the draft.
