Chiefs GM Brett Veach confirmed the team's strategy to select LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane during the NFL Draft, despite speculation about other picks. Kansas City traded their No. 9, 74, and 148 picks to the Browns to secure Delane at No. 6.
Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach addressed reporters in a press conference shortly after Thursday night of the NFL Draft. He revealed his intention to select LSU defensive back Mansoor Delane, even as rumors had him going in another direction.
"I thought we did a good job. I think a lot of people thought we might go offensive line there," said Veach, "But this was our guy the whole time. Again, assuming (David) Bailey and (Arvell) Reese were off the board, again, great players, but we had Delane right up there. It's hard to find good corners. I know that we've done well over the years of addressing corners late. But when you're kind of within reach of a top corner, we did that a couple of years ago, I think we traded a 3 and a 4 to get (Trent) McDuffie. So, traded a 3 and a 5 to get Mansoor Delane, so we're extremely excited."
Veach admitted concern that the New Orleans Saints could take Delane ahead of him, forcing his hand to trade up in the first round. Kansas City trades their No. 9, 74, and 148th pick to the Cleveland Browns to move up to select Delane with the No. 6 overall pick.
"We feel like he was the most complete corner. I'm sure he was the consensus No. 1 corner," said Veach, "When you're picking at No. 9, and you're right there, and you can get the No. 1 corner in the draft, you go get him."
The Chiefs purposely didn't bring Delane into the facility, with all communication taking place primarily on Zoom to avoid any chance of interest leaking.
