Chiefs head coach Andy Reid discussed Patrick Mahomes' participation in upcoming OTA sessions, indicating he is in a good position to engage in activities. Mahomes is recovering well from a torn ACL and LCL injury and is expected to return before the 2026 season.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters at Saturday's press conference during this weekend's rookie minicamp. He shared what he anticipates Patrick Mahomes to be doing in the next OTA session.
"We've got to see on that. He (Patrick Mahomes) is in a good position to be able to do some things. There's some rules and regulations that go with that," said Reid, "So, we just have to make sure we're on top of that part, but if he can do some things, Phase Two, remember, is there's no contact, no offense versus defense. It's phase three that you get into that, and once you start the clock, the clock has got to be rolling, so you just have to evaluate what you want to do there. He's in a position where he can do everything, I think."
On December 14th, 2025, Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL late during the Chiefs' Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. After surgery the following day, he's shown drastic improvement in his rehab and is expected to return to the football field ahead of the 2026 season.
"I know he's (Patrick Mahomes) doing a lot of stuff right now. That's what I can give you," said Reid," He is throwing the ball, and he does it on his own, so he's not getting in any trouble here."
Phase two consists of on-field workouts, which may include individual or group instruction and drills, as well as "perfect play drills," and drills and plays with offensive players lining up across from offensive players and defensive players lining up across from defensive players, conducted at a walk-through pace. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.
