Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters via Zoom on Monday, discussing the team's plans during the first day of OTAs and the status of Patrick Mahomes in the opening session.
"We're fired up to get the guys back in the building. We had a nice turnout today", said Reid, "Reminder, this is Phase One, it's not a mandatory camp at all. It's a time when the players can meet with their coaches, and then they lift weights. No coaches on the field, but they can go out and throw –receivers and quarterbacks, and they can do punt returns and all of that stuff. Again, it's not mandatory, and the turnout was great, so I appreciate that from our guys that they're all in that way."
One player involved in offseason training is star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is continuing to rehab after surgery late last season. Reid revealed the plan for the two-time MVP to remain involved with the team activities.
"He (Patrick Mahomes) goes to meetings, he can lift, do all of that (and) rehab. That's the phase he is in right now, so we will just see – play it by ear and see where he is at," said Reid, "He's doing great, but we just have to be smart with this thing."
Phase One of the NFL off-season training program consists of the first two weeks, during which activities are limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation.
