Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Garrett Nussmeier spoke with reporters at Friday's press conference during this weekend's rookie minicamp. He expressed his leadership skills and early takeaway from working with head coach Andy Reid since being drafted last weekend.
"Obviously, there's so many things. (Head) Coach (Andy Reid) is such a legendary coach and such a great football coach," said Nussmeier, "(I'm) just trying to be a sponge around him. Anything I can take from him, that's what I'm looking to do."
An abdominal injury last November severely affected Nussmeier's performance and progress, limiting him to 9 games in 2025. Nussmeier shared his belief in being an effective leader who can use his experience to elevate and learn at the NFL level.
"I think just growing up around the game and just understanding football. Being taught at a young age what a quarterback's supposed to do (and) what it's supposed to look like," said Nussmeier, "Just trying to fill that role (and) do everything I can to get to know my teammates and get to know some of these guys I've never played with before."
Nussmeier's 2025 season ended with 1,927 yards passing, 12 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He was a finalist for the Manning Award as the nation's top quarterback in 2024, finishing the season with 4,052 passing yards and tying for 10th with 29 passing touchdowns in 13 games.
