Chloe Humphrey scored seven goals as UNC women's lacrosse defeated Clemson 17-6 in their NCAA opener. The victory sets up a rematch against Stanford in the ACC Championship.
The UNC women's lacrosse team looks every bit on its way to a second-consecutive National Championship, despite just opening its run Sunday vs. Clemson.
Anchored by 14 first-half goals, North Carolina dominated the Tigers, 17-6 and advanced to Thursday's ACC Championship rematch with Stanford.
Tar Heels (17-1) superstar Chloe Humphrey scored six of her seven (I know, go ahead and do the meme) goals in the first half. Humphrey's first goal helped UNC tie the score at 1-1, then her final first half tally pushed an already-massive lead to 12-1. With 6:15 left in the third quarter, Humphrey netted her seventh and final score.
North Carolina and Clemson (15-6) entered the second quarter at 5-1, certainly a manageable deficit for the visitor to overcome. After nine second quarter goals, the Tigers quickly search for answers that stayed back in South Carolina.
Addison Pattillo, Reese King and Carolina Godine each recorded Tar Heel hat tricks, while Kiley Mottice scored one goal.
UNC's next opponent, Stanford (17-4), squeaked out a 13-12 victory at ranked Michigan on Sunday. The Cardinal lost a 12-8 decision vs. North Carolina in April, so revenge is surely on players' mind for Thursday's rematch.
If the Tar Heels win this coming week, they'll face the victor of top-ranked Northwestern and Colorado. UNC's lone loss came against (16-3) in March, but the girls in Carolina Blue can't look too far ahead.
