Day 3 draftees of the Miami Dolphins express mixed emotions about their selections, ranging from feeling slighted to honored. Players like Max Llewellyn and DJ Campbell share their motivations and experiences after being picked.
MIAMI GARDENS â Draft mentalities are always interesting to me, especially among Day 3 draftees. Yes, the players are all appreciative that they were selected.
âTo have my name be called is a dream come true,â said Miami Dolphins edge rusher Max Llewellyn, the seventh-round pick from Iowa, âand to have that be called in front of my entire family was really special.â
Still, it was Day 3 of the draft, not Day 2 or Day 1. These are highly competitive guys who, for the most part, donât like being considered, well, second-class citizens, in a sense.
Consequently, reactions to being selected on Day 3 range from anger to feeling blessed to being humbled to being motivated to be better.
âAs of right now, I definitely feel more humbled about my experience, especially getting drafted in the sixth round just because it was something that I never really imagined myself doing,â said Dolphins guard DJ Campbell, the sixth-round pick from Texas who was a five-star college prospect.
âComing from high school and then transitioning to college I always wanted to be a first-round pick. One of the reasons I came back last year was to really improve my draft stock.â
On the other hand, Dolphins safety Michael Taaffe, the fifth-round pick from Texas, and Campbellâs college teammate, was greatly honored to be a Day 3 draftee. He wasnât highly-regarded during his junior varsity career, wasnât highly-recruited out of high school, and was originally a walk-on with the Longhorns.
âItâs my first time somebodyâs really picked up the phone and said, âMichael, we want you,â â said Taaffe, who earned All America honors last season. âAnd so that means a lot. I owe a lot to these coaches that they believe in me.â
Day 3 draftees express a mix of emotions, including feeling slighted, honored, and motivated to prove themselves.
Notable Day 3 picks include Max Llewellyn, a seventh-round edge rusher from Iowa, and DJ Campbell, a sixth-round guard from Texas.
Many Day 3 draftees feel like second-class citizens compared to Day 1 and Day 2 picks, leading to a range of emotional reactions.
Day 3 draftees are motivated by a desire to prove themselves and to overcome feelings of being overlooked in the draft process.

For some, a Day 3 NFL draft selection lights a competitive fuse, so to speak. They feel overlooked, slighted.
Ask Llewellyn.
âObviously, I think I have a very, very high standard for myself,â he said. âSo for other people to maybe not see myself in the way that I do, that definitely makes me a little hungry.
âSo Iâm going to come in there and Iâm going to show these people that Iâm a really good football player.â
Thatâs what one of the Dolphinsâ draftees boldly declared a couple of years ago in colorful fashion.
You might recall Tampa Bay edge rusher Mo Kamara, the Dolphinsâ 2024 fifth-round pick from Colorado State, vowing retribution against the entire NFL after saying that he was âvery, very angryâ about being lasting until the fifth round.
âI have a chip on my shoulder, so it just got even greater,â the affable Kamara vowed to the local media. âSo everybody else, all 31 other teams, look out because the way Iâm about to play against these guys, you shouldâve picked me before.â
It hasnât quite worked out as planned for Kamara, an outgoing sort who always had a big smile on his face in Miamiâs locker room. He played one season for the Dolphins (26 snaps from scrimmage, 30 special teams snaps in five games in 2024) and one for the Buccaneers (five snaps from scrimmage, 30 snaps on special teams in three games in 2025) and hasnât yet made an impact.
Oh, well, thatâs life in the NFL.
Dolphins wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr., the fifth-round pick from Missouri, said heâs certainly motivated by his disappointing draft selection.
âI expected to go off (the draft board on) Day 2, but I didnât,â he said. âBut I was still blessed and happy. Went to sleep, woke up with the same mindset I had on Day 2. Iâm just happy to get the opportunity to play. I still got the opportunity to step on the field, fulfill my dreams and take things day by day.
âBut, of course, it added some fuel. It definitely added some fuel, more motivation.â
Weâll see whether the Day 3 draft status ends up propelling any of these draftees to greater heights.
For what itâs worth, all six of the Dolphins 2025 Day 3 draftees â defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, cornerback Jason Marshall Jr., and safety Dante Trader Jr., the fifth-round picks; running back Ollie Gordon II, the sixth-round pick; quarterback Quinn Ewers and defensive tackle Zeek Biggers, the seventh-round picks â played last season.
Weâll see if thatâs the case for Miamiâs seven Day 3 picks during this rebuilding 2026 season.
Whatever happens, you can be sure the Day 3 draftees will be sufficiently motivated.
âI donât feel like Iâm underrated or anything like that,â Campbell said. âI just feel like Iâm coming in with the right chip on my shoulder, and this is kind of what I needed to really get that dog in me, for sure.â
