Tyler Stephenson of the Reds made a critical mistake during a game against the Cubs by failing to recognize a force out at third base, allowing a run to score. This blunder contributed to a disastrous seven-run inning for the Cubs.
During the Cincinnati Reds' nightmarish fourth inning in their series finale against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Thursday, May 7, Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson allowed the Cubs' Ian Happ to score because he failed to recognize that Reds third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes stepped on third base for a force out before throwing home.
With the bases loaded and the Cubs leading 2-0, Dansby Swanson grounded to third. Hayes stepped on third to record an out.
Stephenson would have had to tag Happ out to record a double play. Instead, he stepped on home plate, without realizing there was no force out.
"No! No! No!" Reds.TV analyst Chris Welsh exclaimed during the broadcast. "Just a middle-school mistake right here. You have to pay attention to what's going on ahead of you. Stephenson did not see the force play at third base. Once Hayes steps on the bag ⦠you have to tag the runner. Oh my."
The play was part of a seven-run inning for the Cubs.
"Nothing is going the Reds' way right now," Welsh said later in the inning.
"If you're gonna give one of the better offenses in baseball five outs an inning, they're gonna score runs," Welsh said during the fifth inning.
Tyler Stephenson failed to recognize that a force out had occurred at third base, leading him to step on home plate instead of tagging the runner.
Chris Welsh described the mistake as a 'middle-school mistake,' emphasizing the need for players to pay attention to the game situation.
The mistake contributed to a disastrous seven-run inning for the Cubs, significantly impacting the game's outcome.
