The 2026 Opening Day at Churchill Downs attracted over 12,000 fans, marking a successful shift to an afternoon event. The day included live racing and festivities, kicking off Kentucky Derby Week.

The 2026 Opening Day at Churchill Downs Racetrack was as much about the daily celebration as it was about the beginning of Kentucky Derby Week.
In breaking with recent tradition, Churchill Downs earlier this year announced it would shift its Spring Meet opener to the afternoon, rather than running it at night under the lights, as was the case from 2011 to 2025.
And the full day event was what Churchill Downs Racetrack President Mike Anderson called a "success."
According to Anderson, more than 12,000 fans were on the ground at Churchill Downs for a day that featured live racing, the 2026 Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby Post Position Draw and other festivities. Opening Day, for many, is a way to give people a taste of the racing week and, also a chance to celebrate personal events.
"We're very happyĀ with Opening Day, we justĀ couldn'tĀ be more happy," Anderson said. "Churchill Downs is the place to be, especially over the course of the next week."

In addition to Anderson relishing in the success of the first day of the Spring Meet at Churchill Downs Racetrack, many racegoers found themselves soaking up the sunny weather as they celebrated personal accomplishments, ranging from birthdays and anniversaries to bachelor trips.
For Miss Kentucky 2026 Ariana Rodriguez, Opening Day serves as a kickoff not only to the week's events but to her 21st birthday, which falls on May 2, coinciding with the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby.
Kentucky Derby Day is one of Rodriguez's favorite events of the year and something she says bringing thousands of people together for one big Kentucky celebration.
"It's my 21st birthday, so it's perfect," Rodriguez said.

For Joey Wagner, the owner ofĀ J Wagner Group, said the shift to Opening Day is something to celebrate.
Wagner, known locally for his entertainment business, donned a custom hat from local bespoke hatmaker Wild Hats, who jokingly calls him "the king of Derby." He said the advent of Opening Day allows him, and others, to get in on the horse racing action sooner.
"Churchill is iconic," Wagner said. "I like it during the day, just to be able to come here on a Saturday before Derby, I get to enjoyĀ it. Next week's a little crazy for me, but, I mean, Opening Day orĀ Opening Night, I still thinkĀ it'sĀ amazing for horse racing."

Wagner wasn't the only one enjoying the daytime festivities on April 25. Surrounded by a flock of friends in pastel polo shirts, Zak Varshoi, a Los Angeles native, said Kentucky Derby Week's Opening Day was the bookend to his bachelor trip weekend.
"We love horse racing, so it was perfect to get everyone together and gamble," Varshoi said.
His friends, who traveled from Washington, D.C., Florida, San Francisco, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles, along with a few locals, were soaking up the sun along the rail waiting for an afternoon race. On April 26, they fly home to their respective cities, but Opening Day was all about one last hurrah with Varshoi, at least before reuniting for the wedding.
And they weren't alone. Several Opening Day attendees were celebrating something other than the start of Kentucky Derby Week.
Skyler and Andrew Daugherty drove up from Tennessee to spend their anniversary at the track. Neither had been to Churchill Downs before, so they thought a visit to Opening Day was the perfect way to celebrate.
"Our anniversary is today, but we just wanted to come and experience it," Skyler Daugherty said.
The married couple, who came up from the Nashville area, said they spent the past day exploring Louisville and having fun around the city before heading to Churchill Downs.

And as Anderson gears up to welcome some 400,000 guests, like the Daughertys, to the Churchill Downs Racetrack over the course of the next week, Opening Day is a great momentum builder for the track and the thousands of fans who came out to celebrate.
"The expansion of Derby Week overĀ timeĀ has beenĀ a great successĀ for us," Anderson said. "It just seems like every day is building and building with momentum.Ā So,Ā weĀ couldn'tĀ be happier."
