Cincinnati Reds outfielder JJ Bleday is experiencing a breakout season after struggling in his previous MLB appearances. Once a top prospect, Bleday aims to prove his offensive capabilities despite past challenges.
Cincinnati Redsā JJ Bleday Sends Message Amid Breakout Season
Cincinnati Reds outfielder JJ Bleday is amid a breakout season. Debuting for the Miami Marlins in 2022, Bleday appeared in 65 games and hit just .167 in 238 plate appearances. Never a plus defender in the outfield, Bleday did not project to bring much value beyond his bat at the MLB level, but as the fourth overall pick of Miami in 2019 out of Vanderbilt, there was certainly some hope that he could become a productive offensive player to offset his subpar defense.
While in college, Bleday was a star. He played three seasons at Vanderbilt, hitting .326 with an OPS over 1.000. This production did not translate directly to the minors, as Bleday owns just a .257 average and a .832 OPS in the minor leagues, but it was the drop-off at the major league level that really became disappointing for a former top-five pick.
In his first four MLB seasons, Bleday appeared in 404 games and posted just a .702 OPS. That translates to a below league-average OPS+ of 97, and the sample size of over 1,500 plate appearances showed that Bleday was an average hitter at best.
But something has flipped this season. While it has just been 16 games in his new spot in Cincinnati, Bleday is hitting .321 with an OPS of 1.210. He homered twice on Thursday against the Washington Nationals, collecting three hits and six RBIs.
"We are capable of playing some really good baseball⦠we have to go out there and get it," he said after the game. "Good things are going to come our way because we have a lot of talent."
While this is a much smaller sample size than his career numbers, fans in Cincinnati are certainly hopeful that this is the former fourth overall pick finally breaking out. And for the Reds, it has been a very welcome sight.
Thumping the Nationals 15-1 on Thursday, Cincinnati improved to 23-21. Despite being two games above .500, the Reds are actually in last place in the National League Central division. The Chicago Cubs currently lead the way at 28-16, with the and 2.5 games back of first. The Pirates are putting together a strong season at 2-ā20, one game better than the last-place Reds.
JJ Bleday is having a breakout season with the Cincinnati Reds, showing significant improvement compared to his previous performances.
In his debut season with the Miami Marlins in 2022, Bleday played 65 games and had a batting average of just .167.
During his college career at Vanderbilt, JJ Bleday hit .326 with an OPS over 1.000, showcasing his potential as a star player.
JJ Bleday has faced challenges in his MLB career, including a below-average OPS of .702 over his first four seasons and struggles to translate his minor league success to the majors.

If Bleday can continue this production, it will certainly allow Cincinnati to better keep pace in one of the surprise divisions in baseball. While nobody expects him to post a 1.200 OPS for the rest of the season, even Bleday being an above-average offensive player would be a huge development for his career.
As previously mentioned, the left-handed outfielder is not an elite defender, which makes it all that much more important that he figures it out offensively at the big league level.
Last season, Statcast had Bleday at -8 Outs Above Average across all three outfield spots. He is at -1 already this season and -17 for his career. While that is not what any team wants from an everyday outfielder, it is a lot more digestible when a player is putting up the offensive numbers Bleday is putting up so far in 2026. As skeptics wait for him to cool off, Bleday continues to stay red hot.
