Notebook: Breaking down the past week of Wisconsinâs spring ball practices
Insights from the Wisconsin Badgers' recent spring practices.
Clemson baseball defeated Charlotte 7-3, completing a season sweep in their midweek series. Jacob Jarrell's three-run homer and strong offensive performance secured the victory for the Tigers.
Clemson baseball jumped on Charlotte early and never let up, riding a huge first inning to a 7-3 win on Tuesday night at Truist Field. The victory secured a season sweep in the midweek series, pushing the Tigers to 24-14 on the season.
The tone was set right away. Clemson sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening inning and scored six runs before Charlotte could settle in. After Luke Gaffney brought home the first run on a groundout, Jacob Jarrell delivered the big swing with a three-run homer to left, his 14th of the season. Jackson Moore later added a two-run double to cap the inning and give Clemson full control.
The Tigers added another run in the fourth. Nate Savoie doubled with two outs and came around to score on Gaffneyâs single, extending the lead to 7-0. Jarrell finished with three RBIs, while Moore and Gaffney each drove in two. Bryce Clavon and Tryston McCladdie also chipped in with multi-hit performances.
Charlotte answered in the fifth. A leadoff walk followed by a double from Walker Morgan set things up, and Todd Hudson connected on a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 7-3. That was as close as it would get.
The biggest moment came in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Ariston Veasey entered and struck out three straight hitters to strand all three runners and keep the lead intact. It continued a strong stretch for the reliever this season. Danny Nelson handled the ninth to close it out, while Justin LeGuernic earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings and five strikeouts.
McCladdieâs return was another key development. After suffering facial fractures less than two weeks ago, he was back in the lineup much sooner than expected and made an immediate impact. On the mound, Dane Moehler continued his return from Tommy John surgery, tossing two scoreless innings in his fifth outing.
Clemson now heads to Virginia for a three-game series beginning Thursday at 7 p.m.
