Clemson uses 11-run first in rout of BC; USC drops opener of doubleheader; Citadel postponed

May 2—CLEMSON — Clemson scored 11 runs in the first inning, its most runs in an inning in seven years, in a 14-4 victory over No. 20 Boston College at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on May 2.

The game lasted seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Nate Savoie led off the first inning with a double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and scored on Tryston McCladdie's walk. After Jarren Purify's sacrifice fly and Tyler Lichtenberger's run-scoring bunt single, Jason Fultz flared a two-run single and Bryce Clavon reached on a bunt single to score a run. Savoie belted a three-run homer, his 16th of the year, and Luke Gaffney followed with a solo homer, his eighth of the season. Four batters later with two outs, Lichtenberger lined a run-scoring single to cap the 11-run frame.

It was the most runs in an inning for the Tigers (27-20, 7-16 ACC) since scoring 11 in the fourth inning against The Citadel on May 8, 2019. It was Clemson's most runs in an inning in an ACC regular-season game since May 19, 2005, when it scored 11 runs in the fourth inning against Miami.

Every Tigers starter scored a run in the game against the Eagles (35-15, 17-9).

Clemson starter Michael Sharman (6-1) earned the win by tossing six innings, allowing six hits, two runs and one walk with three strikeouts.

Savoie finished 2 for 4 with a double, homer and three RBIs, while Lichtenberger, Jack Crighton, Jason Fultz Jr. and Clavon each drove in two runs.

LSU 6, South Carolina 1 (Gm. 1)

BATON ROUGE, LA. — LSU starter William Schmidt allowed one run in six strong innings to stifle South Carolina in the first game of a doubleheader.

The teams played the second game later Saturday.

In the opener, starter Amp Phillips allowed six runs — five earned — on eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts for the Gamecocks (22-25, 7-15 SEC).

No USC player had more than one hit. Ethan Lizama had a double and the lone RBI for South Carolina.

LSU did most of its damage in the first two innings with two in the first and three more in the second.

The Citadel-Presbyterian, ppd. rain

Due to inclement weather sweeping through the area and creating unplayable field conditions at Riley Park, The Citadel and Presbyterian opted to postpone Saturday's game.

The contest will be made up as part of a Sunday doubleheader in Clinton with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. at Elton Pollock Field.
