No. 9 Coastal Carolina broke open a tight game with an eight-run seventh inning and rolled to an 12-2 win over No. 2 North Carolina on Tuesday. The Chanticleers finished with 15 hits to the Tar Heels’ six and went 8-for-19 (.421) with runners in scoring position. North Carolina finished 4-for-5 in those situations.
Coastal Carolina reliever Daniel Parker (2-0) earned the win, working two scoreless innings and allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
UNC reliever Walker McDuffie took the loss despite a strong outing. He went 4 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. The game did not get out of hand until after he left in the sixth.
Rex Watson put the Chanticleers on the board in the first inning with an RBI single up the middle. The Tar Heels answered in the second when Cooper Nicholson launched a two-run homer to left, his 11th of the season, to give North Carolina a 2-1 lead.
Coastal Carolina moved back in front in the sixth on RBI singles from Domenico Tozzi and Colby Thorndyke, then buried the Tar Heels an inning later. Watson started the seventh-inning outburst with an RBI double to left-center, Jackson Winer followed with a two-run single through the right side and a wild pitch added another run. Ty Barrango and Blake Barthol capped the frame with RBI singles to push the lead to 9-2.
The Chanticleers tacked on two more in the ninth on Barrango’s RBI groundout, a sacrifice fly from Dean Mihos and another wild pitch.
Watson finished with multiple RBIs, while Winer, Barrango and Barthol each drove in two as Coastal’s offense delivered timely hits throughout the night.
