Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has outlined one major “problem” holding up the club’s signing of Cole Palmer from Chelsea.
Palmer continues to be strongly linked with a move to United, despite his recent assertion that he wants to stay at Chelsea beyond the upcoming summer transfer window.
In an interview that dropped on the eve of United’s 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge, Palmer revealed that he had held talks with the Chelsea hierarchy and was consequently confident about the club’s direction. There have been rumours that he is unhappy in London and would welcome the opportunity to return to Manchester.
Despite coming through the ranks at Manchester City, the England international is a boyhood United fan and idolises Wayne Rooney.
His form has declined since Enzo Maresca’s departure and Liam Rosenior’s arrival as his replacement in January. Injuries have also not aided Palmer, who has managed nine goals in 20 Premier League starts this season.
Ryan Giggs has endorsed United’s move for Palmer, suggesting that the playmaker would perfectly complement in the heart of United’s creative setup. However, Scholes has suggested that he would have Palmer at United “all day long” if Fernandes were not at the club.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said of Palmer, “He’s struggled of late, big time. I know he’s had injuries and he played in the summer, someone said he played the last three summers… he’s a maverick-ish.”
“The only problem I see with signing him is where does he play? He doesn’t play instead of Bruno Fernandes.”
“Now, if Bruno Fernandes goes in the summer then, yeah, all day long.”
Addressing Fernandes’ future, Scholes added, “I think he’ll be one of them where, every single summer he’s at United, he’ll get linked with something, the Saudi thing or something.”
“I think it will come up again this summer.”
Fernandes will be aiming to get closer to breaking the Premier League assist record when United return to action on Monday against Brentford. His assist for Matheus Cunha against Chelsea took his season tally to 18, two shy of the all-time high 20 mark, currently held jointly by Kevin de Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
