It's easy to forget now, but six months ago, things were looking pretty bleak for the Boston Celtics. They'd lost much of their core over the offseason and Jayson Tatum to injury, perhaps for the season. Many pundits expected them to take a major step back this season and perhaps miss the playoffs.
Instead, the Celtics proved them wrong by remaining one of the best teams in basketball, winning 56 games and finishing second in the Eastern Conference.
Not many people believed in Boston at the start of the season, especially after they got off to a slow start. Colin Cowherd kept the faith, however, and deserves credit for going against the grain by believing in them.
"I said the Celtics culture, coaching, Brad Stevens, they're still gonna be really good this year," Cowherd said on Monday's episode of "The Herd." "Well, they finished with the number two seed despite the Tatum injury. And remember, they moved off four of their top nine players."
Many expected that to be a death sentence for the Celtics, but not Cowherd, who had more confidence in them than most.
"Between Brad Stevens, Mazzulla, the culture, the intelligence in the building. How many other teams could lose four of their top nine players...and still be favored to win the East?" Cowherd added.
In that sense, Boston certainly overachieved and exceeded preseason expectations. Not many predicted that, but Cowherd did.
