The Colorado women's lacrosse team capped off an impressive Big 12 season on Saturday afternoon, capturing its first-ever conference tournament title, taking down top-seeded Florida, 8-6, to win the Big 12 Tournament Championship.
Colorado is 14-3 on the season, including its title-clinching win over No. 4 Florida. The win came after a three-hour weather delay that pushed the start time back into the evening.
"I'm just so proud of this team," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said after the game. "We started off the season with a big win at Northwestern, and we were excited, but partway through the season, I felt like we were still stuck in that moment and not creating new memories. I'm proud of this team for the last third of the season, just battling, showing up, continuing to push each other, and really proud of how we came out today."
The Buffs' defense has been the story of the season, ranking first in goals allowed. That was on full display against Florida, one of the better offenses (16 goals per game), as the CU defense held the Gators to just six goals.
Attacker Maddie Shoup won the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award and scored four goals on eight shots, including the game-winning goal.
"Maddie is just a competitor," Whidden said. "She's such a competitor, and she shows up every day. She knows what she carries on her shoulders for this team, and she's going to give you her best effort every single day."
Four other Buffs joined Shoup on the All-Tournament team: Lily Assini, Rowan Edson, Elena Oh and Jess Peluso.
Oh and Peluso were the stars of Colorado's defensive effort, forcing Florida into 17 total turnovers, 12 of them caused by the Buffs' pressure.
Whidden and Colorado now await their seeding and matchup for the NCAA Tournament, which will be the program's fourth appearance. The selection show is on Sunday, May 3, at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
