Key points
- Colts named fit for free agent Jauan Jennings
- Jennings is the top available wide receiver post-draft
- Colts need to strengthen their wide receiver position
- Loss of Michael Pittman Jr. impacts the team
- Nick Westbrook-Ikhine is the current starting wideout
The Indianapolis Colts were named a fit for free agent Jauan Jennings, who is considered the top available wide receiver still available, following the 2026 NFL draft.
With the dust having settled on the NFL draft, Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports highlighted the biggest position of need for all 32 teams and then noted a free agent to fill that need as well.
When it comes to the Colts, Pereles believes that the wide receiver position still needs to be addressed and that doing so with Jennings is an obvious choice.
"In keeping Alec Pierce, the Colts lost Michael Pittman Jr. Pierce is a big-play threat who added some nuance to his game in 2025, and Josh Downs is an elusive slot man with some downfield pep," Pereles wrote. "But behind that, there's not much; the current starting wideout opposite Pierce appears to be Nick Westbrook-Ikhine. Jennings is far and away the best free agent wide receiver available."
Along with Westbrook-Ikhine competing for those WR3 snaps, Ashton Dulin and rookie Deion Burks should be in the mix as well.
Jennings' role in the San Francisco offense has really expanded over the last two seasons. During that span, he's been targeted 207 times, totaling nearly 1,700 yards with 15 touchdowns.
The 2024 season was his most productive, when he totaled 975 receiving yards. In 2025, Jennings caught more touchdowns, but saw his reception rate dip from 69% down to 60%.
According to Over the Cap, the Colts have $26.627 million in available cap space -- more than enough room to make an addition. At this stage of the offseason, contract values won't be breaking the bank by any means.
Uncertainty lingers around the WR3 role for the Colts, but Ballard has given himself options. While he's changed up his free agency approach in recent years, Ballard may first want to see what Westbrook-Ikhine, Dulin, and Burks can give him before exploring any outside additions.
