Colts QB Daniel Jones 'throwing' and 'moving' after Achilles injury
INDIANAPOLIS – Less than seven months since he tore his ACL and MCL in his right knee in a Week 5 on-field collision, Spencer Shrader has casually been knocking down 50-plus-yard field goals.
Like several Colts starters, Shrader’s injury rehab will bleed into the start of the team’s offseason workout program that kicks off this week, but Colts general manager Chris Ballard told reporters that Shrader, as well several players like team captains quarterback Daniel Jones and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, continue to trend in the right direction as they work their way back onto the field for traditional work later this summer.
Ballard still maintained the Colts do not have a clear, concrete timeline as to when to expect Jones, the franchise’s starting quarterback who recently signed a two-year deal worth up to $100 million, back in normal action after he tore is right Achilles tendon in Week 14 at Jacksonville. Jones, though, is “throwing” and “moving.”
“He’s in a really good spot,” Ballard said of his team’s starting quarterback. “We’re all shooting for Week 1 for sure, but we’ll kinda let his body dictate (it). He’s moving along."

Similarly, Buckner is not expected to return to full action until training camp after the All-Pro defensive lineman underwent surgery earlier this offseason to repair a herniated disc that led to a compressed nerve in his neck that sidelined Buckner for seven of the team’s final eight games of 2025. Ballard told reporters that Buckner, who at 32 enters the final year of his contact this fall, recently began performing plyometric workouts (high intensity, explosive movements) to test his mobility.
The Colts will also be without star wide receiver Alec Pierce until the start of training camp in July, Ballard said, after the team’s new WR1 underwent a “clean-up” procedure on one of his ankles that requires a three-month recovery timeline.
Ballard said cornerback Justin Walley and safety Hunter Wohler – both standout 2025 draft picks who shined last summer in training camp – are expected to return to fully participation before the end of OTAs. Walley tore his ACL during a joint practice with the Ravens in August after appearing in line to land a starting spot somewhere on the field. Wohler suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury in his right foot during an August practice.
Indianapolis is also without veteran slot corner Kenny Moore II and backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Jr. for this week’s activities and likely into the future, after both made trade requests in recent weeks.
