One Indianapolis Colts' undrafted rookie already has the attention of assistant GM Ed Dodds.
With rookie minicamp taking place this weekend, linebacker West Weeks out of LSU has showcased his ability to potentially help out on special teams right away.
"West, I know for a fact he's gonna make an impact on special teams because he's big and fast and he's done that before and he's looked good out here," said Dodds. "I mean, he's moving even better out here than he did on LSU tape."
For many UDFAs, special teams play is critical to earning a roster spot, since their playing time likely isn't going to come on either offense or defense.
Weeks joins the Colts as a fairly experienced special teams player, with 454 career snaps under his belt over five seasons, which includes playing 209 special teams snaps in 2023. He's also contributed to five of the six different phases over his career, per PFF.
To go along with that experience, Weeks ran a 4.56-second 40 during the pre-draft process. That speed can be quite beneficial when it comes to special teams play as well.
At the linebacker position, CJ Allen is expected to be the MIKE, while Akeem Davis-Gaither and Bryce Boettcher potentially compete for the WILL role. Also on the roster are Austin Ajiake and Jaylon Carlies. Typically, teams roster five linebackers, sometimes six.
