Concerns over Greg Gard's in-state recruiting struggles are overblown

Donovan Davis’ decision to commit to Iowa State reopened a familiar complaint around Wisconsin men’s basketball under Greg Gard: the idea that the Badgers routinely lose in-state prospects and pay for it later.

The noise usually spikes any time a top local name picks another Big Ten or high-major option, and it has again with Davis leaving the state.

Gard’s track record speaks for itself. Quite simply, he wins. Gard has won at a 65% clip over his career and posted a 61% winning percentage in Big Ten play, production that has kept Wisconsin nationally relevant even as recruiting battles swing both ways. Fans can argue style, roster construction, or individual misses, but the results have followed Gard season after season.

The in-state narrative also ignores the in-state players Gard has landed. Just last year, Gard brought in Will Garlock and Zach Kinzinger, a reminder that Wisconsin still signs local players and treats the state as a priority.

The Badgers have never operated as a program that lives or dies exclusively on Wisconsin recruiting, and Gard’s teams have continued to win without needing to sweep every in-state cycle.

Davis committing elsewhere still stings, but ultimately, there's no need to panic over a high school prep player who may or may not be a difference-maker. The next marker is whether Gard can turn the current roster into another high-end league team and quiet the in-state chatter with wins once the season tips.
