William Contreras knew his role as he came up to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning for the Milwaukee Brewers.
It was simple: Get the ball in play some way to get a game-winning run home from third base. Contreras did that, connecting for a sacrifice fly as the Brewers edged past the New York Yankees 4-3 at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
Contreras hit his sacrifice fly off of Yankees reliever Tim Hill, the sixth pitcher used on Saturday night by Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Garrett Mitchell, the Brewers' designated runner at second base, moved to third on a wild pitch from Yankees reliever Fernando Cruz.
With the Yankees up 3-2 in the home half of the 10th inning, Luis Rengifo then walked. Gary Sanchez flew out to right field for the first out of the inning. Jackson Chourio followed with an infield single to New York shortstop Jose Caballero. Mitchell scored the game-tying run and Rengifo moved up to second base.
Brice Turang then reached base on a fielder's choice that involved Hill. So, that loaded up the bases for Contreras to come up and put on a hero's cape for the Brew Crew.
Milwaukee reliever Aaron Ashby, the fourth pitcher used on Saturday night by Brewers manager Pat Murphy, earned the victory. Ashby worked two innings, giving up one hit, one run (unearned), walked one, and struck out three. Ashby remains perfect record-wise this season at 7-0.
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the New York Yankees with a final score of 4-3.

Cruz took the defeat for the Yankees, falling to 3-1 this season and suffering his first blown save in the 2026 MLB season.
Kyle Harrison started for Milwaukee, going four innings, giving up four hits, two runs (both earned), four walks, and six strikeouts. Cam Schlittler got the start for the Bronx Bombers, throwing six innings of shutout ball. Schlittler gave up two hits, no runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out six.
But the Yankees' bullpen couldn't keep the Brewers off the scoreboard. Brent Headrick worked 1 1/3 innings, giving up one earned run while walking one and striking out one. Camilo Doval followed, suffering his third blown save this season. Doval gave up two hits and an earned run in 2/3 innings.
David Bednar worked a clean inning for the Yankees, but he was followed by Cruz and Hill.
Paul Goldschmidt led off the game with a solo home run, his third homer this season. The Yankees jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Then, with the bases loaded in the third inning, Goldschmidt hit an infield single to Rengifo at third base. Amed Rosario scored and the Yankees led 2-0.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Brewers' Jake Bauers hit his sixth homer this season, a solo blast, to get Milwaukee on the board at 2-1. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Contreras singled to left. Turang scored and that tied things up at 2-2. Ultimately, Saturday night's game went to extra innings.
The Yankees had runners at first and second base with two outs. Ryan McMahon singled to left field, bringing home Max Schuemann for the go-ahead run. But Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was thrown out trying to advance to third base for the final out of the inning.
It's never a good idea to make the final out of an inning at third base. That came back to haunt the Yankees as the Brew Crew posted the victory.
The Yankees and Brewers will finish their weekend series at American Family Field on Sunday afternoon.
