Max Correiro hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, leading East Providence to a 10-6 victory over Lincoln. The game featured a dramatic comeback, with Correiro's hit securing the win in extra innings.
LINCOLN â Max Correiro wasnât going to let a fastball beat him.
That was his approach at the plate in the top of the eighth inning Thursday afternoon, and it turned out to be ideal for East Providence.
Correiro crushed a grand slam to finally settle this Division I thriller with Lincoln, giving the Townies the lead in the lone extra frame. Kyle Desrosiers nailed it down from there on the mound and East Providence left Chet Nichols Field with a 10-6 victory on April 23.
The Lions lost a two-run lead in the top of the seventh, pulled even on a Caden Oldham solo homer in the bottom half and slipped behind again for good when they went back into the field. Chris Charbonneau started on second base as the automatic runner under the tiebreaker rules and consecutive hit-by-pitches put Gavin Palombo and Aidan Martins aboard. Correiro dug in from the left side against Carson Mellen and smashed the first pitch over the fence in deep right field.
âI was just going up there knowing I was getting a fastball,â Correiro said. âI just said, âIâm not going to get beat.â â
It was the third hit of the afternoon for Correiro, who singled through the right side in the first and beat out a roller to second in the seventh. His swinging strikeout and pop to first in two other at-bats had Correiro thinking how Lincoln might want to attack him with the game on the line. Mellen lost breaking balls off the plate to put Palombo and Martins on â an educated guess had Correiro on his way to becoming the hero.
âI really just blacked out,â Correiro said of the moment he saw the ball disappear into the trees in right. âIâll be honest â I knew the stakes. I knew what it meant.â
The Townies were down to their last out in the seventh before giving Correiro a chance to make his mark under the bright sunshine. JJ Renaud lined a run-scoring single to center to make it 5-4 and Jamison Sydney came to the plate with two on and two hits already to his credit. He sent a slicing liner to the base of the fence in right for a two-run double, handing East Providence a 6-5 advantage.

âNothing different from the approach earlier in the game,â Sydney said. âHit the ball hard and good things will happen. Just trying to keep it simple.â

The Lions took exactly one pitch to recover from surrendering the advantage. Oldham led off representing the tying run and went the same way as Correiro with a towering shot toward the scoreboard in right. The Townies declined to bring the potential winning run to the plate by walking Oldham for the third time and were punished instead by his bat.
âItâs definitely tough,â Sydney said. âWe do our best to try to stay as level as we can. Ups and downs donât help anyone.â
East Providence (8-1) jumped to a 3-0 advantage in the second thanks to four Lincoln errors and a sacrifice fly to right by Palombo. Renaud cruised into the bottom of the fourth before hitting the wall, as the Lions (7-2) sent 10 men to the plate and grabbed the lead. Mike Parisiâs sacrifice fly, Tyler Almeidaâs run-scoring single to left and Connor Smithâs sharp two-run single to right-center were part of a rally that gave Lincoln a 5-3 cushion.
âIt was really our game to lose,â Correiro said. âWhen youâre up three at the start of the game and you let them get the lead, it was our game to lose. We had to keep going and just do a job.â
Jose Figueroa won it in relief for the Townies, covering 3â innings behind Renaud and allowing just one run. Logan Xiarhos hit his pitch limit in the seventh for the Lions and wasnât part of the decision, denied the win after escaping jams in the fourth and sixth innings. East Providence is on a second four-game winning streak of the year despite a largely rebuilt pitching staff and a few new faces in the lineup.
âI can speak for everyone â I'm a little bit surprised,â Correiro said. âBut I knew from the work these guys put in during the offseason that this was coming.â
