What's next for Jayson Tatum? How Celtics superstar injuries make future feel uncertain
Jayson Tatum's knee injury raises questions about the Celtics' future.
Eloy Jimenez has cleared waivers and elected free agency after being designated for assignment. The Toronto Blue Jays may consider reuniting with him following George Springer's activation from the injured list.
Could Toronto Blue Jays Reunite with Former Top Prospect?
On Saturday afternoon, after a win over the Minnesota Twins, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that the recently designated for assignment Eloy Jimenez had cleared waivers and elected free agency.
But, is it possible that the Jays reunite with him and try to bring him back? It's possible, given the latest development with outfielder/DH George Springer.
Springer was activated from the injured list earlier, recovering from a fractured toe, which forced Jimenez into DFA limbo.
However, Springer was hit in the same toe on Saturday, leaving the game. Manager John Schneider is hopeful he'll be OK in a day or two, but the Jays could look to scoop back up Jimenez if they think Springer may end up needing another injured list stint.
Even if Springer is back in short order, the depth that Jimenez could provide in the minors might be welcomed. Of course, he would need to be OK with that role.
Still just 29 years old, Jimenez is a six-year veteran of White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. Ranked as the No. 4 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipelinein 2018, Jimenez made his debut with Chicago in 2019.
An integral player for the White Sox as they came out of their prior rebuild, he helped Chicago make the playoffs in the COVID 2020 season and again in 2021. He burst on to the scene in the 2019 campaign, hitting 31 home runs in 122 games. He also hit 14 homers in the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign (60 games), winning the Silver Slugger, but then the injuries set in.

He played just 55 games in 2021 and 84 games in 2022. He rebounded in 2023, hitting 18 home runs and driving in 64, but he struggled in 2024, hitting just .238 with Chicago before getting traded to Baltimore and hitting .232 in 33 games.

He signed a minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2025, hitting .278 with three home runs in 40 games at Triple-A Durham. He ended the year in the Blue Jays organization, playing just six games.
He was granted free agency in November of 2025 but re-signed this offseason. He hit .290 for the Jays with nine RBIs, which could be another reason they'd like him back. Of course, another team could come calling with a more guaranteed role at the big league level.
How things could play out with Jimenez remains to be seen, but for now, the Jays will hope to get Springer back as soon as they think.
