Coventry 5–1 Portsmouth: Lampard’s men crowned champions in style

Coventry City sealed the Championship title with a 5- 1 win over Portsmouth, having already secured their return to the Premier League after a 26-year absence this past Friday.

Goals from Haji Wright, Bobby Thomas, Kaine Kesler-Hayden and two from Ephron Mason-Clark secured the win, while a Portsmouth own goal from Regan Poole sealed the result.

As It Happened

Coventry City headed into the game with confidence after securing promotion following a 1–1 draw with Blackburn Rovers, and the Sky Blues made a flying start, taking the lead after 11 minutes when Haji Wright headed home from close range into the top right corner, having earlier seen an effort sail over the bar.

The hosts controlled the first half, enjoying the majority of possession and registering two shots on target, while Portsmouth failed to test the goalkeeper. Portsmouth’s first opportunity came after 30 minutes, when Conor Chaplin’s left-footed effort from outside the box was saved in the top-left corner by Carl Rushworth.

Madiodio Dia was shown a yellow card during the first half. Coventry came close to doubling their lead when Bobby Thomas saw his header from the right side of the six-yard box strike the crossbar. At half-time, Conor Shaughnessy came on for Dia as Coventry looked to see out their advantage.

Lampard’s men picked up where they left off after the restart, dominating possession and quickly converting their control into a second goal. It was Ephron Mason-Clark who doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half, finishing from close range on the right side of the six-yard box.
