One of the top safeties in the 2027 class could add his name to the Washington Huskies’ star-studded recruiting class when four-star safety Gavin Williams announces his college commitment on Sunday, May 17.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound standout at Damien High School in Southern California, who is ranked as the nation's No. 86 overall prospect and No. 6 safety, told Rivals that he will announce his choice between Notre Dame, UCLA, USC, and UW.
All four schools—three from the Big Ten Conference and the independent Fighting Irish—have set an official visit over the next two months before Williams announced Monday that he’ll make his commitment ahead of any potential final trips.
Over three seasons at Damien the coveted four-star defensive back has racked up 148 total tackles, 13 pass breakups, 11 interceptions and 10 tackles for loss, proving to be one of the best defensive players in the state of California and attracting attention from at least 40 schools.
Similar to UW sophomore cornerback Dylan Robinson, Williams has also been a standout offensive weapon at receiver for Damien. However, the expectation is he will end up staying on defense at whichever school he chooses on Sunday.
With the Huskies set to lose senior safety Alex McLaughlin after this coming season safeties coach Taylor Mays and secondary coach John Richardson will need another next-man-up to compete and follow in the footsteps of sophomore Rylon Dillard-Allen and freshman Gavin Day, both of whom are expected to feature heavily on defense for second-year coordinator Ryan Walters this fall.
Although 247Sports has a crystal ball in favor of the Trojans and rumblings in recent days have indicated the former UW Pac-12 foe is the destination, the long-standing relationship between Williams and the Huskies’ staff, especially safeties coach Taylor Mays, and potential immediate playing time could have Jedd Fisch’s team well positioned in the long run.
