Cowboys best pick, biggest surprise, and remaining needs among other takeaways

The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2026 NFL draft pretty much with a one track mind. Defense, defense, and more defense. While it was in an entirely defensive draft, it was pretty close to being one.

By most accounts, the Cowboys 2026 draft haul was a successful one. They absolutely nailed the first-round with S Caleb Downs and edge Malachi Lawrence, then following it up with some solid selections, some of which could push for a starting role this year. In the end, most fans around Cowboys Nation have to be pretty happy with the results.

Best pick

The Cowboys may have had to trade two fifth-round picks to acquire Caleb Downs’ services, but it was a lot cheaper than having to trade into the Top 10. In the end, they got their man and he should come in and completely transform Dallas’ defense for the better, from both a physical and mental standpoint.

Biggest surprise

Drafting Jaishawn Barham 92nd overall in the third-round wasn’t that big of a surprise, but where the Cowboys plan on playing him might be. Barham was considered an up and coming pass rusher, but Dallas seems to like him as and ILB, where he previously played at both Michigan and Maryland. Fingers crossed it works out.

Biggest question mark

LT Overton is a bit of a tweener coming out of Alabama. He doesn’t really have the speed or athleticism to be a full-time edge player and may not have the mass/strength to hold up full-time on the inside. Where he fits in Dallas is the ultimate question. Is he an edge or maybe a 4i? Something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Dallas may have toed the line in not drafting redshirt players, but with Devin Moore and his well-documented injury history at Florida, they are betting on his immense talent. A second-round talent when healthy to the Cowboys were able to draft in the fourth-round. The 6’3″ CB excels in zone coverage, perfect for Christian Parker’s scheme.
