There was a time when the Dallas Cowboys waited until just before training camp to present their rookies with contract offers. Then, there was a period they'd wait until after the rookie minicamp to complete the deals. But now, the Cowboys are signing their draft picks when they first get their hands on them.
On Friday, the Cowboys agreed to terms with six of their seven picks from the 2026 NFL draft, signing all but their second, first-round pick Malachi Lawrence. The six deals totaled a whopping $56.6 million in total contract value, which combined with their non-pick rookie class totaled around $90 million worth of deals.

Jaishawn Barham: $6.815 million | 2026 Cap Hit: $1.24 million
Drew Shelton: $5.575 million | 2026 Cap Hit: $1.18 million

In the NFL offseason, when teams can carry up to 90 players on their roster, only the Top 51 salaries count towards cap compliance. So all of the picks beside Smith count against the cap, and none of the UDFAs do. but the players who are now in the Top 51 bumped other lower-paid players out of the equation.
So even though they totaled $11 million in 2026 cap hits, these six signings only used $4.4 million of additional space.
Lawrence's deal is slotted as well, and he should sign for around $20.5 million total, with a first year cap hit of around $3.75 million, of which $2.7 million will be used in additional cap space.

The Cowboys also signed their UDFA class to deals on Friday. UDFA contracts slot in for less than $3 million each.
Because all of their contracts are for less than Smith's deal, they also fall outside of the Top 51 contracts, and therefore don't impact the team's cap situation either. Prior to signing Lawrence, the Cowboys have around $8.3 million of cap space remaining.
