The Dallas Cowboys received high marks for their NFL Draft class, particularly for first-round picks Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence. However, questions arise regarding their seventh-round selection, East Carolina receiver Anthony Smith.
Cowboys' Seventh Round Selection Oddly Named Questionable Pick
The NFL Draft has come and gone, and now we are in the part of the offseason when draft classes are graded; for the Dallas Cowboys, most agree they hit it out of the park.
Granted, that is largely due to what transpired in the first round with Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence being selected.
But what about those in the later rounds, say East Carolina receiver Anthony Smith?
Most draft selections from the fifth-round onwards are seen as dart throws by teams, in the sense of, maybe that player will develop into something, maybe they won't.
Either way, premium draft capital wasn't used, so it isn't a big deal if they don't turn into a quality player.

But still, players at the end of the draft face an uphill battle just to make the roster, and in some instances, last until training camp, so grading them is a little bit of an odd thing, at least for me. Wait until you see what they can do.
For CBS Sports' Josh Edwards, he's named every team's most questionable pick, and for Dallas, he's named Smith, a seventh-rounder.
"The board fell into place well, however, and the franchise was able to address critical defensive needs," Edwards wrote.
"Little concern could be raised with the team's choices, but Smith may be the person least favorite of the group, despite some late buzz in the process."

Considering the make-up of the Cowboys' receiver room, adding another body, especially in the seventh round, is nothing to sneeze at.
Anthony Smith's selection is viewed as questionable due to concerns about his fit and performance potential compared to other available players.
The standout picks for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Draft were Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence, who were selected in the first round.
Most analysts agree that the Cowboys received high marks for their NFL Draft class, particularly due to their strong first-round selections.

Posting 1,053 yards and 7 TDs from 64 receptions last season, Smith comes to The Star, likely to land on the practice squad, if all goes well.
CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jonathan Mingo, and KaVontae Turpin are at the top of the depth chart.
So, Smith, who is seen as a field-stretcher and home-run hitter for Dak Prescott, with some suggesting he could even push for a roster spot under Brian Schottenheimer, likely as a special-teamer, might not be that bad after all.
Of course, this offseason will tell us definitively or not, but any seventh-round selection is hardly a "questionable" one. At least for me, anyway.
It's a pure dart throw in the hope you might hit on a potential contributor for your team.
Could that be Smith? We're about to find out.
