DJ Wingfield has to simply be happy to be playing football again.
Apparently, he's also playing it at an eye-catching level. Wingfield went to Dallas Cowboys rookie minicamp over the weekend, and he left with a contract.
His agent shared the news on X on Monday, and it led to a fascinating look at Wingfield's curious college football career.
Wingfield played at Purdue through the 2024 season. He started all 12 games that year with the Boilermakers at right guard.
After that campaign, he chose to transfer to USC.
Wingfield was actually out of eligibility, though, and didn't know it. When he learned that, he appealed to the NCAA, but lost the appeal.

So in the 2025 season, Wingfield didn't get to play a single game for the Trojans, or anywhere else.
Instead he sat out the season as ineligible. It surely didn't help his draft stock, and so he went undrafted and didn't even get a contract right after the draft.
The specific reasons for DJ Wingfield's NCAA ineligibility have not been detailed in the available information.

Instead, he had to use the Cowboys' rookie minicamp as a sort of tryout. Dallas didn't have much space on its offseason roster, but did have room to sign Wingfield.
It's still an uphill climb for Wingfield. Undrafted players don't often make NFL rosters. He may have to aim for the practice squad.
But he's already done the hard part, sitting out an entire season and having to get ready for the NFL Draft process anyway.
Now, the door has been opened just a bit for Wingfield, and he's trying to surge through it.
