The Cowboys are signing tight ends Michael Trigg and DJ Rogers as undrafted free agents, both ranked in the top 25 at their position. This could lead to a competitive training camp battle for roster spots.
The Cowboys rightfully focused on fixing the defense with the majority of their picks in the 2026 draft, as Caleb Downs, Malachi Lawrence, Jaisahwn Barham, Devin Moore, and LT Overton are expected to be in the mix for meaningful snaps right away.
But for an offense that rolled like a well-oiled machine for most of last season, any new pieces obtained for the upcoming campaign could have a more difficult time making the roster as a rookie.
That does not mean, however, that the team isn't actively trying to raise the floor at certain positions. And a look at the undrafted free agent class that's being assembled suggests there could be a fascinating training camp battle brewing at tight end.
The Cowboys are signing Baylor's Michael Trigg and TCU's DJ Rogers as UDFAs. But far from also-rans, both Trigg and Rogers landed inside the top 25 at the tight end position in Dane Brugler's "The Beast" draft guide, and both seem to have a legitimate shot at finding their way onto the Dallas roster.
Trigg bounced from USC to Mississippi over his first three years of college ball before finally landing at Baylor in 2024. He blossomed with the , setting school records for receptions and receiving yards last season and finishing second among FBS tight ends in touchdown catches en route to being named a Mackey Award finalist.

Both Michael Trigg and DJ Rogers are ranked in the top 25 tight ends according to Dane Brugler's draft guide.
The signing could spark a competitive battle at the tight end position during training camp, potentially affecting roster decisions.
The Cowboys primarily focused on strengthening their defense with most of their draft picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Brugler ranked him the 16th-best tight end in the class and noted his "humongous catch radius" and "big, powerful hands," making him a true downfield threat. The knocks on the 23 year-old tend to skew toward things like consistency and maturity, with a pair of one-game suspensions (one in 2022, one in 2024) causing concerns for some. Brugler points out that one NFL scout commented that Trigg "needs hard coaching," which is something he'll no doubt get in Dallas under Lunda Wells.
Rogers, meanwhile, has a grand total of 12 starts under his belt- all last season- and 53 receptions in five years with the Horned Frogs, even though he is already 24 years old. Considered a late bloomer in his football development, he showed enough to be ranked 21st among all tight end prospects in "The Beast."
The improvements in his final college season jumped off the tape, Brugler points out, while his "massive wingspan" and "fight to get every yard" make Rogers a prospect worthy of an offseason invite, especially when he comes with a reputation for being "selfless and coachable."
In Dallas, both Trigg and Rogers make for intriguing project players. At the top of the depth chart, Jake Ferguson is coming off a Pro Bowl year that saw him rack up career-high stats in targets, catches, and touchdowns. Some analysts have wondered, however, if the club is really getting their money's worth after signing him to a four-year, $52 million extension last summer. With so many big-money players in Dallas, salary is always a factor.
Behind Ferguson is where things get interesting. Fourth-year man Luke Schoonmaker has simply never lived up to the expectations that came with his second-round draft slot. He's split his time between offense and special teams at a 2-to-1 clip respectively, but has just 49 receptions in 51 games to show for it, being utilized far more often as a blocker than a pass-catching target.
Brevyn Spann-Ford made strides in 2025. The biggest tight end on the Cowboys roster looks to still be on the rise, and this year, he could well push Ferguson for the TE2 role.
Princeton Fant is entering his fourth season. Used almost exclusively as a special-teamer over 11 total game appearances, he's been more of a mainstay on the practice squad.
It's not unthinkable that Trigg and/or Rogers could surpass Fant and even Schoonmaker in the eyes of the coaching staff this summer, especially if one or both can develop some quick chemistry with quarterbacks Dak Prescott, Joe Milton, and Sam Howell.
The Cowboys have tended to carry four tight ends. With two of those spots seemingly on the bubble this offseason, the newest low-risk, everything-to-prove candidates in Trigg and Rogers may be worth keeping a close eye on.
