The South Dakota softball team honored three seniors on Senior Day but lost to Omaha 13-4. Despite a strong fourth inning, the Coyotes couldn't overcome an early deficit.
VERMILLION, S.D. (USD) — The South Dakota softball program celebrated the accomplishments of three Coyote seniors in their final game from Nygaard Field Saturday afternoon, but it was the Omaha Mavericks who took the win, 13-4.
PITCHING DECISIONS
**Win:**Maddia Groff (16-6)
Loss:Campbell German (0-9)
Omaha jumped on the scoreboard with four first inning runs. They would extend their lead to 6-0 in the fourth with two more runs.
In the fourth, South Dakota got to starter Alexis Wiggins with four runs of their own to cut the lead to two at 6-4. In a frame aided by Omaha defensive miscues, the Coyotes got RBI singles from **Kiya Johnson**and Katie Hofmann.
The Mavericks got all four runs back the next half inning with a two-run home run, a solo shot, and an RBI fielder’s choice. Omaha also got their final three runs in the seventh to extend it to 13-4.
Autumn Iversen went 2-for-4 on the day, while senior Delaney White also had two hits in her final game at Nygaard Field. Brylee Hempey got a pinch hit at-bat in the seventh on her Senior Day. Faith Mills, though not dressed, was celebrated as well following the contest.
**UP NEXT:**The Summit League Tournament is on deck for South Dakota. The Coyotes earned the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 seed Kansas City next Wednesday, May 6 from Jane Sages Cowles Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. With a 1 p.m. first pitch.
