After starting the 2026 season 10-17, the Boston Red Sox made the bold and shocking decision to purge much of their coaching staff on April 25. Longtime manager Alex Cora and several of his assistants were fired hours after the team's biggest win of the season.
Although the team was struggling in many areas, critics were quick to point out that only Cora and coaches on the position player side were fired, whereas the team's pitching coaches were spared.
That was notable for several reasons. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow used to be an MLB pitcher and built the team around pitching and defense. He was also the one who hired the team's pitching coach, Andrew Bailey, a former teammate and friend of his. On the other hand, he'd inherited Cora and most of the fired assistants when he took over the team in late 2023.
When WEEI asked Breslow about that on Thursday, he explained why that was the case.
The Red Sox made the decision after a disappointing 10-17 start to the 2026 season, aiming to improve team performance.
Critics noted that only Cora and position player coaches were let go, while the pitching coaches remained, raising questions about the decision.
The overhaul was announced on April 25, shortly after the team's biggest win of the season.

"I would push back on that and I would say that the pitching had been inconsistent, that is absolutely true," Breslow said. "My job is to look at all of the options that we have to improve things, and ultimately made the decision that in some cases, change was necessary, and of course in others, it wasn't."
Breslow proceeded to give Bailey a big vote of confidence and believes the Red Sox's pitching staff has already started to turn things around.
"Ultimately, I have confidence in the pitching group, in their ability, Andrew and others, to get us on track," Breslow added. "Hopefully over the last week, we've seen evidence of that."
To Breslow's point, Boston's pitching and defense have been much better lately, averaging just 3.1 runs allowed per game since Cora was fired compared to 4.6 runs allowed per game under Cora.
The Red Sox rotation has been hit hard by injuries and working with new pitchers like Sonny Gray and Ranger Suarez can take time, so perhaps that's why Breslow was willing to be more patient with Bailey and give him a longer leash.
