As two professional sports teams get ready to pack up and leave the state, another has just played its first-ever game in Connecticut.
CT United FC, an MLS Next Pro team made up of future Major League Soccer stars, took the field at UConn’s Morrone Stadium on Saturday.
The team is owned by Connecticut Sports Group, including majority owners Andre and Michelle Swanston, but former UConn men’s basketball star and San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle also owns a piece.
The club played its first four games of the season on the road, but took to the pitch in Storrs on Saturday, falling to Columbus Crew 2 by a 3-1 score.
Alex Monis scored the first home goal in CT United’s history, slotting one home in first-half stoppage time to make it a 2-1 game.
Zachary Zengue scored twice for Crew 2, and Oneal Taylor added another.
Despite the final score, CT United did dominate shots (16-7) and shots on goal (7-3).
CT United FC will hit the road again next week to face NYCFC II before returning to Morrone Stadium to take on Philadelphia Union II on April 26. They’ll play one more game there before moving to Yale’s Reese Stadium in New Haven for the remainder of the season.
The team planned to build a new, state-of-the-art stadium in Bridgeport, but the state legislature voted against using public money in February. It will play in stadiums across Connecticut in its inaugural season.
