The Chicago Cubs are leading the NL Central with a 27-16 record, but Alex Bregman is underperforming despite expectations for his $140 million contract.

The Chicago Cubs are having a great 2026 season so far, as they sit atop the NL Central with an impressive 27-16 record, 2.5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers.
They've dealt with some serious injury issues, especially in the rotation, but the Cubs are still staying strong thanks to a good offense and elite defense. But one key slugger is not producing as well as expected.
As Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report called out, Alex Bregman isn't producing the elite offense the Cubs were likely hoping for from the $140 million-plus slugger.
"Bregma's production hasn't been nearly as underwhelming (or downright woeful) as most of the players on this list," Miller writes. "However, the only reason we haven't been talking on a regular basis about him being one of the biggest disappointments is because the Cubs have one of the best records in spite of his shortcomings."
While it's not a secret that Bregman isn't producing as great an offensive production as he did last year or in many of the last few years, this call-out from Miller is a bit egregious, as Bregman is still an above-average hitter this season.
Alex Bregman is not producing the elite offense expected from him, which has raised concerns among fans and analysts.
The Chicago Cubs are currently at the top of the NL Central with a 27-16 record, leading by 2.5 games.
Alex Bregman is signed for over $140 million, which adds pressure for him to perform at a high level.

Bregman, so far in 2026, has been a bit underwhelming for his massive contract, but compared to the rest of Major League Baseball, he's not actually been that bad.
Through 42 games and 191 plate appearances this season, Bregman has 41 hits, 17 runs scored, five doubles, one triple, four homers, 14 RBIs, two stolen bases, 22 walks, 32 strikeouts, a .246 batting average, and a .694 OPS.
That OPS being below .700 is cause for some concern, but not to the degree that the Cubs need him to break out ASAP, like what Miller is calling out.
Bregman's OPS+ is 105, which means he's five-percent better than the league average hitter this season. It's the lowest mark of his MLB career, and well below his 131 OPS+ from last season.
But, since 2020, he's had multiple seasons below a 120 OPS+, with a 117 in 2020, 113 in 2021, and 116 in 2024. Bregman might not be playing like an All-Star, but he's still a solid contributor.
Sure, Bregman hitting better would be a nice plus for the Cubs, but it's not such a dire issue that he needs to break out ASAP. This call-out doesn't make much sense, especially since Bregman isn't playing nearly badly enough to warrant needing a breakout this year,
