With numerous injuries to their pitching staff, the Chicago Cubs made a recent attempt to land a former All-Star.
Ultimately, they failed to do so.
According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, the Cubs made an offer to right-hander Lucas Giolito, but were "outbid" by the San Diego Padres.
Giolito and the Padres agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract. In today's baseball landscape, that's not much for a starting pitcher who posted a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts the previous season.
"What the Cubs were already getting from [Colin] Rea and [Javier] Assad is what they would have been hoping to get from Giolito," Jordan Campbell of Cubbies Crib wrote Friday.
"Adding in the reality that Giolito will likely need a ramp-up assignment in the minors, and that likely took the urgency away from the Cubs in matching the deal offered by the Padres," he added. "Not to mention, Matthew Boyd had already returned to the Cubs' rotation by the time Giolito made his decision."
The Cubs aimed to strengthen their pitching staff due to numerous injuries.
Lucas Giolito signed a one-year contract worth $3 million with the Padres.
Last season, Lucas Giolito posted a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts.

San Diego assigned the 31-year-old to Single-A Elsinore so he can shake off the offseason rust. The Cubs probably would have made a similar decision.
In the grand scheme of things, losing out on Giolito won't have a significant impact on the outcome of the Cubs' season. Would it have been nice to have the depth? Sure.
But things didn't turn out that way.
