Boro & Saints tie balanced on knife edge after first-leg stalemate
Middlesbrough and Southampton play to a goalless draw in the first leg of the Championship play-off semi-final.
Bruins AGM Evan Gold is a finalist for the Vancouver Canucks GM position. The Providence Bruins GM previously competed for the Toronto GM role but was not selected.

The Boston Bruins might be looking at a front office move of their own in the next few days.
Bruins AGM Evan Gold has been named a finalist for the open Canucks GM job. The salary cap specialist and Providence Bruins GM was also a finalist for the open job in Toronto, did not get it, and was then linked to the open job in Western Canada. Now that the Providence season is over, the process might speed up.
The Maine Mariners also dropped Game 1 of Round 2.
Elsewhere around the NHL, there were two playoff games last night. They were not close. One evened a series, and one team reclaimed a series lead. Two more games are on the schedule for tonight, and the Flyers are looking to extend their season.
In other news, the Devils and Maple Leafs might battle for another front office executive, and the Hart Trophy finalists were announced yesterday.
And Gavin McKenna’s mother is facing a charge of furnishing liquor to minors.
Happy Saturday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:
CAPTAIN: The Bruins have work to do this offseason. Should their captain be one of the top priorities? I say no, but not because they do not have one, but because of what they already have. The two front-runners steer the ship, and the supporting cast worked well this season, so why change it?
Evan Gold is the Assistant General Manager of the Boston Bruins and also serves as the GM for the Providence Bruins.

The Maine Mariners lost Game 1 of Round 2 in their playoff series.
Gold's potential departure could impact the Bruins' front office structure and future decisions, especially after his previous candidacy for the Toronto GM role.

Boston Bruins (video via YouTube): Though David Pastrnak certainly made his case for the ‘C’ after the first period of Game 4, exploding in the locker room after an abysmal period by the Bruins.
EVAN GOLD: Bruins AGM Evan Gold is a finalist for the Vancouver Canucks’ GM opening, as reported by Elliotte Friedman (on “32 Thoughts: The Podcast”) and Rick Dhaliwal. Gold, 46, has been with the Bruins since 2015, an AGM since 2019, and has been the P-Bruins GM since March 2023.
MAINE: The Maine Mariners dropped Game 1 last night, losing to the Wheeling Nailers (PIT) 4-3 in overtime. Brooklyn Kalmikov scored with 4:46 to go in the third period, but Mike Posma tied the game 47 seconds later to force overtime. Ryan McAllister won the game for the Nailers.
Game 2 is tonight from WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, WV.
Montreal Hockey Now: The Canadiens picked up a 5-1 win in Buffalo last night, evening their first-round series as it shifts back to Montreal for the next two games. A quick goal from Alex Newhook got the game started, and it was all Montreal from there. Marc Dumont has the highlights.
After the game, Tage Thompson was asked if he’s playing through an injury, to which he responded: “I don’t think that’s any of your business.”
NHL.com: The Vegas Golden Knights steamrolled the Anaheim Ducks last night, picking up a 6-2 road win in Game 3. Mitchell Marner scored his first career playoff hat trick, and Lukas Dostal was pulled in the second period.
PLAYOFFS:
Philly Hockey Now: After taking a 3-0 series lead in Round 1, the Flyers find themselves on the opposite end of that for Round 2. They need more desperation, and might benefit from looking at the Penguins’ game in Round 1. Will James has more on what the Flyers need to do to stay alive.
New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils and Maple Leafs battled for Sunny Mehta; now they might be at it for another front office executive. Bryan McCabe, a former Leafs defenseman, is currently the director of player development in Florida, but has some interest from other teams. James Nichols has more on the potential moves coming to the Devils’ front office.
NHL.com: Nikita Kucherov (TBL), Nathan MacKinnon (COL), and Connor McDavid (EDM) were named the three finalists for the Hart Trophy yesterday, given annually to the player “voted most valuable to his team.”
San Jose Hockey Now: Left off that list? San Jose’s Macklin Celebrini. Especially if it is the player “most valuable to his team.” Though the Sharks did not make the postseason, Celebrini had 115 points, and he was involved in 46.2% of the Sharks’ 249 goals this season (second to McDavid). Sheng Peng has more on the Celebrini snub.
PSU Collegian: Gavin McKenna, the presumptive first-overall pick this summer, was charged with felony aggravated assault after an altercation outside of a Penn State bar. Well, from that same night, his mother has been charged with furnishing liquor to minors. Her court date is scheduled for June 3.
McKenna’s charge was for knocking the lights out of someone who was harassing his mother and family. He followed the McKenna family out of the bar. McKenna’s charges were dropped.
