Daily Bean: Maine Wins, Busy Day for Player Safety, More Front Office Moves
The Boston Bruins await the results of the McAvoy suspension hearing and a front office search.
The Bruins top defenseman had his hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety (DoPS), and some of the Bruins’ front office executives may be on the move to a vacant GM spot. Though nothing is confirmed, reports swirled that he won the job, but the team has not confirmed anything.
The DoPS was busy yesterday, even aside from the meeting.
In other league news, the Avalanche stormed to a 3-1 lead last night, picking up a three-goal win, though that does not reflect how the game went. The Devils’ new GM made his first move, bringing a new AGM to Newark. The Penguins have some trade pieces, the Hurricanes extended a depth forward, and the Maple Leafs said goodbye to another executive.
Also, a New Jersey judge ruled that the man who killed Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau will stand trial after he tried to get charges dropped.
Happy Tuesday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:
EVAN GOLD: Evan Gold, Bruins AGM and P-Bruins GM, is a finalist for the GM job in Vancouver, according to multiple reports. It is between him and Abbotsford Canucks GM Ryan Johnson. Chris Johnston said Gold is the “likely winner” for the job yesterday on the Chris Johnston Show.
The outcome of Charlie McAvoy's suspension hearing has not yet been announced.
The Boston Bruins are reportedly searching for a new general manager, with some executives potentially moving to fill the vacant position.
The NHL Department of Player Safety evaluates incidents and determines suspensions based on player conduct and safety regulations.
McAvoy's suspension could significantly impact the Bruins' defensive lineup and overall team performance.

Donnie & Dhali (video via 𝕏): But nothing’s official. Elliotte Friedman said it was “premature” to make a final call on the GM in Vancouver.
Sekeres & Price (video via YouTube): David Pagnotta, amongst others, reported that Bruins AGM Jamie Langenbrunner may follow Evan Gold to Vancouver if he gets the job. He noted that it is a lateral move, but also said that Gold may want to bring someone in to work with him.
MCAVOY: Charlie McAvoy had his in-person hearing with the NHL DoPS yesterday for his slash on Buffalo’s Zach Benson. There has been no announcement yet.
MAINE: The Maine Mariners picked up their first win of the second round last night, taking the Wheeling Nailers (PIT) down 6-3 last night. They took a 5-0 lead before the halfway mark of the game. Ben Allison had three points (1-2–3), and Luke Cavallin made 36 saves in the win.

Game 4 is tonight at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, ME.
Colorado Hockey Now: The Avalanche have a 3-1 series lead after picking up a 5-2 win last night. The Avalanche went down early, but were pouring shots on Jesper Wallstedt before they finally beat him. They fought off a Minnesota push in the third period, preserving a 3-2 lead, then potted two empty netters to close the win.
Aarif Deen has more takeaways from the win, including more on the Avs’ goalie switch to MacKenzie Blackwood.
PLAYOFFS:
Montreal Hockey Now: The DoPS handed out fines to Montreal’s Arber Xhekaj for roughing ($3,385.42). He punched Sam Carrick after the whistle. They also got Buffalo’s Beck Malenstyn ($3,515.63) for goaltender interference.
Montreal Hockey Now (video via 𝕏): Here is the play that got Malenstyn fined.
New Jersey Hockey Now: New Devils GM Sunny Mehta went back to Florida to make his first Devils’ hire. Yesterday, the team announced the hiring of assistant general manager Braden Birch. He was a special assistant to Bill Zito, and he handled the hockey operations and salary cap management in Sunrise. James Nichols has more on the move.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins have some, not many, but some trade pieces. While anything is possible, and Dan Kingerski noted that Justin Brazeau only played in one playoff game, the Penguins might be able to acquire a top-round pick for a 20-goal scorer… or something back for their excess amount of prospects.
ESPN: The Carolina Hurricanes, fresh off their second-round win, extended forward Mark Jankowski yesterday. He signed a two-year contract with a cap hit of $1.85 million, a bump from the $800,000 he made this season.
TSN: Shane Doan and the Toronto Maple Leafs have parted ways. He was brought in by former GM Brad Treliving, and his contract was set to expire on June 30. Pierre LeBrun noted that Doan interviewed with the Vancouver Canucks.
As Paul Bissonnette of TNT has noted on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, the new Leafs GM “stabbed [Doan] in the back” during their time together in Arizona. Chayka showed Doan the door after two years of working together.
6abc Philadelphia: The man who drove drunk and killed Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau tried to get the charges dismissed, again. Yesterday, a New Jersey judge denied that attempt. The suspect’s attorneys attempted to “dismiss several charges,” citing that the blood samples used to determine his blood alcohol content were improperly handled.
Last January, he rejected a plea deal that would have sent him to prison for 35 years.
